Hour-Man quickly remembered that it was a bedroom with a fountain in it, south and west of here, that he met the "shadow man."
Hour-Man did not find the two rat men hiding between the lizard skin, but moving into the room did flush them out from behind the display cases. They tried to flee past Hour-Man, Doris, and Sandman towards the exit they had all come in from, but they got attacked as they did so.
Hour-Man whipped one with a length of chain he was still carrying around, moderately wounding it ((1 dmg)).
Doris pistol-whipped the other and knocked it out cold ((5 dmg)).
Sandman pistol-whipped the one who got away from Hour-Man and knocked that one out cold too ((6 dmg!)).
"Now this is more like old times..." Sandman said as he dragged his back into the room with him.
"Let's keep looking for that secret exit anyway," Doris said.
They didn't find one, but they did find that the swords and shield came off the wall as separate pieces. They were functioning items too, not simply decorative.

hourman will use the sword and shield and comments, " lets tie these up and if we head south and west we might run into the "shadow man".

"Good idea," the Sandman said, and he took one sword after Hour-Man took the other.
Luckily Hour-Man had been carrying a length of chain with him! He used that to bind the two unconscious rat men.
There was no discernable way to go south from here, but Hour-Man remembered the route to that bedroom was to go west from the room with the pit, and then south.* So that's the way they went...
((To be continued. I should really update the map, and provide a map of level 2, one of these days...))

The new JSA heads down the coordinator in hopes of finding the man with the shadows

Hour-Man looked for a coordinator, but couldn't find one.
Instead, they backtracked into the pit room, headed west down a corridor that ran 70'. At that point, there was a door to the right (north) that opened into the room where the dozen rat men were last time. To the south, the corridor wrapped around a corner and took a parallel path east, just south of the first corridor, until it came to the door that was the only known way in or out of the strange bedroom.
Behind it was a room, 20' wide and 25' long (east-west), opening to the right (south). They entered in the northwest corner. There appeared to be a passage leading out in the southwest corner, nearby, heading back west, but Hour-Man knew from last time that was just a 10' deep alcove where the kerosene barrel had been.
There were still leather and other animal skins pinned to the walls, rugs on the floor, a nightstand, cabinet, and end table, but the phonograph, table lamp, and the bed itself were all gone now. And the most unusual thing in the room was still the 3' high retaining wall around a 5' square pool of water with water lilies floating in it.
There seemed to be no one home.
Sandman and Doris West filed in.
"It looks like your friend is moving out...?" Doris mused.
"Perhaps to a more secure location. We did find this once..." Sandman said.

After a minute of looking around, and finding nothing new, Bart spoke up. Hour-Man realized Bart hadn't joined them in the room by then.
"What is going on?" Bart asked, maybe louder than he'd meant to. "Even that room across the hall, where the main group of rat-men was before, sounds empty. Where is everyone?"
This was a question worth investigating, so everyone moved back towards the east-west corridor, so the front rank of Doris and Hour-Man could check out the north door. There was no light under the door, and no noise behind it.
The rat-men's lair was a stinky mess, littered with their own feces, as well as ropes apparently made from their own fur. There were metal spears lined against one wall that looked like they had once been fence posts straight from a hardware store. But there were no rat-men to be seen.
"They're either deeper in this lair...or we may have snuck in the back just as they were going outside for the raid we'd been expecting for days," Doris whispered to Hour-Man, Sandman, and Hawkgirl (the latter two being the row behind).
"We should check on the 'Mephisians' and see if they're here," Sandman said. "Just be wary of their illusions and avert your gaze as much as possible."
There was an open doorway to the west heading into the Mephisians' lair. A soft glow of light, like from a candle, had been coming through the doorway, but it went out as they were speaking.
"We may have lost the element of surprise," Sandman said. "What do you think? Just charge in? Try to sneak in? Save that room for later...?"

Hour-man whispers, " we might as well have a look as they might come behind us to attack. Lets try to sneak in"

As the heroes move into the dark room, flashlight beams swinging back and forth -- the floor gives way under them! Hour-Man, Sandman, Doris, and Bart all tumble down into a pit and land hard!
The impact of falling jarred the battery loose in Hour-Man's flashlight, so he struggles to adjust it and gets it switched back on seconds later. Only to see Hawkgirl hovering above him!
"Guys -- what are you doing laying on the floor?" Hawkgirl asks.
((You can see more details in the Hero Tracker folder, but Sandman and Hawkgirl are both moderately hurt, and everyone else is lightly hurt.))

hour-man gets up and brushes himself off. He checks on his companions and asks if they are all right. Hour-man then says, " unfortunately we have to keep going if we want to save our friend. I am sure the snake men will be less forgiving if we came back empty handed. Hawkgirl are you strong enough to carry us out of the pit or we could use rope?"

Doris had her flashlight fixed by now too. "Here, Hawkgirl! Catch this and look around up there first!" And Doris went to throw it up into the air.
"I've got it!" Hawkgirl said. Her arms seemed to stretch down into the pit, right over Doris' head, and snatched the flashlight away.
"There's something strange going on here..." Sandman said.
"I'll say!" Bart exclaimed.
Before anyone could say more, Hawkgirl used the flashlight to sweep the room above. "There's someone else in here. He's running for the exit!"

Hourman says, " can you stop him "
Hourman checks to see how far they are down in the pit.
(ooc scott with race the train power and raise car could he use both powers grab his friend with his enhance strength and use the new super speed to run up the sides of the pit?)

"Hawkgirl, don't!" Doris said, louder than Hour-Man. "You're injured, your leg. You can't take one of these creatures alone, and he might be getting reinforcements!"
As Hour-Man was trying to gauge how to use his powers in a new way, Sandman said, "Hold on. I think..." Sandman then put out his hands, walked slowly towards the wall of the pit -- and vanished right through it!
((If Hour-Man still wants to try his plan he can; he won't know if it'll work until he tries.))

"What do you mean come down?" Hawkgirl said. "You're standing right next to me!"
Eventually, everyone figured out the pit was an illusion and they could "walk out of it" just by touching the wall and moving through it.
"I can't believe we fell for that," Bart said. "And after seeing what they could do with illusions earlier too!"
"Why weren't you affected, Hawkgirl?" Doris asked.
"I don't know."
"It's possible Mephisians can only influence so many minds at once," Sandman offered, "or Hawkgirl was looking away at just the right moment. Who knows. The important thing here is that we fell for it long enough that the Mephisian got clean away. What we need to decide now is, do we chase after him, knowing he can keep throwing illusions behind him, or move in the other direction and look for whoever is still down here."
"Without forgetting that they could be up on the surface, causing trouble right now," Bart interjected.

Hour-man comments, " we have Zatarra that is also a special guest of the serpent people and I don't want to go back and say we failed. If we find the leader and take him down the mephistans might flee. So lets go down the other direction and see whats down their but keep an eye on behind us. Let's go."
DM question one: since we disbelieved in the wall is the damage real ? Dm question two: it is suggested in the comics that Hawkgirl was from Egypt and ressurected or is this the version from Thanagar. Either way would illusions effect her since she is not human? Is this something that Hour-man would know?)
