Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Lower East Side Grand Street 3:45 pm
Vino Denola's address was public, so finding him did not prove difficult. His Italian-style villa was the finest-looking house on the few blocks zoned residential on Grand Street as it cut through the Italian neighborhood of the Lower East Side. Captain Desmo/Hawkman (with his passenger, Zatara) and Hour-Man, driving separately, could park as close or as far from the house as they wished.
The villa sat on a half-acre property surrounded by a 7' tall iron fence. There were fenced yards to either side. The villa was two stories tall, with an unattached garage. The driveway had its own wide gate.
Once they had settled on where to park, Zatara stepped out and waited to talk to both Heroes at once. "Do we want to put the villa under surveillance for a while? See who comes and goes? Or we can have our new Hawkman airlift us over that fence and snoop around the grounds. Or just walk up and ring the doorbell..."

Hourman does some brainstorming " we could have our new hawkman fly over and do some reconnaissance or we could just stake it out here or if there is a restaraunt nearby go in our civilian attire and have a meal and watch. Maybe we wait until dark to enter?" Then Hourman has an idea and looks to see if there are phone lines going down the street. If there are ones close he says, " another idea is that I have civilian attire and would need a utility belt but I could climb up the phone pole and pretend to be a worker so I can check out the property. "
(OOC when will Hourman powers be available?)

>(OOC when will Hourman powers be available?)
((Hour-Man has only wrecking things available to him for the next 8 hours and 15 minutes of game time.))
It would involve some neck craning and some lucky seating, but there was a restaurant down the street from which watching the front of the villa would be possible from. There were no utility poles here on densely populated Apple Island, only in the outlying boroughs of Appleton City.

"Let's go to that Italian restaurant over there for some pizza and watch the villa a bit," said Desmo. "We can figure out our entry plan when we learn more."

The Heroes realized they had all missed lunch and were hungry for that pizza. Luckily, the restaurant (or ristorante) down the street had pizza*.
After 20 minutes, a young woman left the villa and got into a car that had pulled up to the curb by the main gate. The woman seemed to be in no particular hurry and no one was acting suspicous.
Zatara, who was full of stories, was facing the wrong way to observe and was going on with his story. "So then Mr. Springer took us back to his family's farm. He told us the ghost of his grandfather, who committed suicide years ago, was haunting the place because he disapproved of Springer's management of the farm, and was sabotaging his every effort to sell it. When I looked around for clues, I found a dead body inside the barn, with a warning from the ghost, written on its chest..."
*((Pizza should be a common food in Appleton since the mid-30s; though we are still a few years away from it being served by the slice...))

"Is that right? You don't say, Zatarra," said Desmo inwardly rolling his eyes and looking a little impatient and distracted thumbing through a copy of the "The Warriors of Mars" by. E.R. Burroughs while occasionally glancing at the Dino Denolla Vila. "By the way, maybe after this grub we should get a closer look. How about I do a fly over to see if there are guards or attack dogs. If all is clear, we can work on a plan for me to fly you guys over on the property. What do you say?"

Hourman listens to the stories and remembers the ghost stories and science fiction stories in the future he has read about. To Desmo question he says, " if there is no one in the yard. Why not fly down and open the gate for us. "

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Lower East Side Grand Street 4:30 pm
It was still broad daylight when Captain Desmo, the new Hawkman, donned his wings and took to the air (once the bill for lunch had been settled on).
There were no dogs in the yard, but there was an old man in a suit who seemed to be patrolling the grounds. He was not patrolling fast, so while he was on one side of the villa, it would be very easy to fly over the fence and drop people off on the other side of the villa (he was on the north, or left side of the villa as you were facing it, side).

HOurman accepts the lift. He does suggest to maybe unlock the gate or a side gate in case there is too much resistance

Hour-Man went over to check both the front and the garage gate and found neither of them were locked. No impregnable castle was this place!
He was just about to say something like that to Hawkman and Zatara, waiting for him, when they all heard a man scream. It was a horrible scream, coming from somewhere inside the house.

"Let's get in there fast!" said Desmo. Captain Hawkman suggested entering the gate one at a time on foot, and enter quickly through the front door. If the old man is a problem, he suggested knocking out as needed and tying him up for later questioning.

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Lower East Side Grand Street 4:34 pm
Captain Desmo, startled by the scream, had momentarily forgotten that he had already flown everyone over the gate. All that remained was to run to the front door. They reached the door in single file, Captain Desmo, Hour-Man, and Zatara bringing up the rear. They reached the inside of the house before the old man on the other side of the house could intercept them.
The front door had been unlocked and easily forced open. There was no sign of anyone, and no lights on in the house, but there was a landing and a flight of stairs to the upper level right here, and three doorways to other rooms on this floor (left, straight, and to the right). A man's voice could be heard coming from upstairs.
Pursuing the sound upstairs, they found two men in a billiards room. In the corner of the room was a man in a butler's uniform. He was blubbering softly, but was otherwise motionless. In front of him stood a weird apparation - a man with a chalk-white face, wearing a chalk-white bodysuit, green cape and cowl, and matching green gloves and shorts over the bodysuit. He was sharpening a pool cue with a knife, but upon seeing the three Heroes dropped the knife and pointed with the sharp cue, saying, "You should not be here! This is a private matter between THE SPECTRE and his prey!"
