Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Until noon
Everyone returned home to a good night's sleep. Captain Desmo to the flat he shared with Hobbs. Hour-Man to the apartment that had once been the real Rex Tyler's. Hawkgirl to her penthouse suite.
The next morning, Shiera Sanders slept in.
Rex Tyler had work at Bannerman Chemical, unless he called in sick. Because his android body did not heal as fast, he was still injured from last night's stabbing.
Captain Desmo had no job, but Hobbs did, and Captain Desmo could go with him to see if the museum had any leads on the assassins. Or he could go console his good friends, Jack and Marie.
Or they could head straight back to the Bentley residence and see what clues the police missed in the night.
((So it turns out Darren remembered right and I was wrong - Zatara is the one who shows up at noon, not Sandman. I just need to know what you want to get done before he shows up.))

"Sorry Jack," said Desmo on the phone. "No, we still haven't got the leader. I want to keep up the pace on this this, so I'm not going to visit right. Maybe this weekend. Ok. I will. Don't worry. Yeah, I know. Give my best to Marie. Bye for now."
"Hello, Hour Man?" said Desmo. "Why it's 6:30 in the morning! You didn't oversleep did you? You do sleep don't you? A little rough for wear good lad? We'll I wanted to catch you because I'm heading over to the museum in the morning. His boss is something of an amateur sleuth and possibly messer - how do you say it? Ah, yeah a mesmerist that 's it. Anyhow, he may know something about our assassins. At least I'll check, and I might even see if he can help us out in some other ways. Bentley residence? Yeah, I wanted to head over after and see what this box was you found. Maybe I could use the key on it... What time? I wanted to go there at 10. If all is quiet, I'll go in... Wait for you? If you can be there at 10, I'll go in with you. Is that Dame of yours Eagle Lady still around? Alright, I was just kidding. I know its Hawkgirl. Anyway, if she wants to continue teaming up... She does? Well that's swell... Zan... who? Oh great. Well, love to meet her later. Sure could use all the fighting gusto we could get. Got to run now fellow. I'll meet at 10 if you can get out of work!"
"Well, that about wraps up my phone calls Hobbs," said Desmo lighting his pipe and fully decked up in his aviator suit with goggles. "Thanks for the eggs and toast old boy. Now I'm going to follow you into work and see if your boss - amateur newspaper clipper that he is - has any leads on the assassins. He might even be useful out in the field with us. And then I've got to do one last check on the Bentley residence. No you can't come along. It will be boring, and one of us has got to pay the bills. The plane? We'll keep it for now, but I was thinking of trading it for a helicopter so we could at least fly in something here... I'll let you know if there is any work - driving and what not for you to do in the evening. And of course, the others may use your number to leave a message for me."
((OOC: Recall background on Hobbes' boss from Season 4 and made by me. I'm not sure if the Editor will accept what I wrote about him as story or not, but here was the description, and I can create a character if you want me to for him: Hobbes' 70 year old boss Dr. Fenton Grussbaker. Hobbes mentioned that the Dr. on a few occasions had this uncanny ability to look someone in the eye, and make the most unagreeable retch such as the miserly museum CEO or complaining museum visitors suddenly apologetic and amenable to Dr. Grussbaker's every whim. But more interestingly, Dr. Fenton Grussbaker had a seemingly unrelated hobby to his paleontological research. He apparently kept a daily scrapbook of newspaper clippings of mastermind criminals in the city and read it each morning while adjusting his glasses and pulling at his white beard muttering invectives such as, "This slime! I'd put him in the sewer with the rats, if I had the chance!"))

Hourman wanted to investigate the scene so he did call the chemical company and instead said to the receptionist, " Sorry my name is Rex Tyler and I have a family emergency. My great Aunt Sally is sick and I have to fly to Pittsburgh to take care of her. I should be gone a few days. Please let my supervisor know. "
Hourman then received the call from Desmo and agrees to check on the house. He also says, " Zatarra another mysterman I worked with in Kentucky is coming to help out too. Agent West sent him along with Hawkgirl. The four of us can easily investigate the house although Zatarra won't be in until noon. Breakfast?"

"Oh, you got some days off? Capital man! Like I said I wanted to tag along with Hobbes to find out if his boss Dr. Grussbaker who seems to be a real news afficianado and possible psychic has any leads," said Desmo. "How about I meet you at Friendly's Diner by the museum at 8:30? I've eaten, but I could use a spot more coffee while you eat. We can look in on the museum together. Hobbes has to got there by 8:00. Then after we can check the Bentley residence before Za - sorry I'm not great with names - your mate shows up. Yes, by all means, bring Hawkgirl if she can join us at the diner or at the house at 10 am."

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Uptown Until 9 am
Friendly's was a pretty average-looking dinner with average-looking waitresses serving pretty decent coffee and blueberry pancakes with slightly above average customer service. The android posing as Rex Tyler came in plain clothes, moving stiffly because of his injuries, while Captain Desmo elicited stares with his ever-present helmet and goggles. Desmo sipped coffee patiently while Rex ate (the carbs helped power his self-healing).
Neither had any luck raising Hawkgirl on the phone this morning, though this was perhaps not so unusual since it had been less than seven hours since they were last all awake.
After pancakes, they went together to the neighboring Dinosaur Museum of Natural History to see Hobbs and Dr. Fenton Grussbake.
"Dr. Grussbake says you caught a real bad one," Hobbs said with an "I know something you're about to know" smirk.
"Yes, George Bentley - the slime!" Dr. Grussbake said from behind his desk, thumping the desk for emphasis with his frail fist. "He was suspected of murdering his wife, but they were never able to prove anything, you know." ((More to come!))

Rex asks. " exactly what did the newspaper and/or radio say how Ms Bently died of? Was she buried or cremated or did she disappear?"
(note to editor: Hour-man would have used a first aid and also cleaned his wounds before going to bed)

"Professor," said Desmo. "I did find a the diary of Bentley's wife in the Bentley home, and George sounded like a monster. We'll take another visit there and do some careful checking... But how is the thug Bentley connected to Akhim Khan? Dr. Grussbake, do you have any sense of Khan's whereabouts?"

Rex finishes his breakfast and gets another coffee. He tells Desmo he is going to call Doris West and see if he can contact Zatarra to give him a location to meet us (not sure if we established a meeting place). He will also use another dime to call hawkgirl

Dr. Grussbake answered Rex: "I believe she died falling down the stairs in their home, if I'm remembering correctly. I don't know what was done with her body."
Rex, at that point, asked for permission to place a long-distance call here to Washington, D.C.
"Well, I suppose...if it is really important..." Grussbake responded. He was aware that long distance phone calls were expensive and the museum was always strapped for cash.
That was when Captain Desmo pressed the doctor for more information on Akhim Khan.
"Remember what we know of the Society of Assassins," Dr. Grussbake responded. "Their presence here in the States was minimal. Naturally, to establish themselves here, they would need to make connections through organized crime. No doubt he reached out to Bentley and offered to help with his racket, perhaps even passing himself off as a demolitions expert.
"That part of this whole matter is most puzzling to me. Why set off such a large explosion in the department store? It surely does no good for your protection racket to blow up the business you plan to extort. I wonder if Akhim arranged that deliberately as a way of flushing you out. If his assassin had been at Bentley's, waiting for you, then the entire business so far was just one giant, elaborate trap for you, Captain Desmo."

"That's a tall price to pay for revenge good man," said Desmo. "I'd rather Akhim just take rather than trying another bomb like that."
"Professor," said Demo. "Do you have any guess where he's hiding out? We might be beginning to scare him a little. Thanks to the team Hour-Man and I - and Hobbes - are making, we're much better organized than he expected. But what heinous and un-American plan does that ruffian have up his sleeve next? Maybe we can find more clues at the Bentley house..."

Hour-Man got Doris West on the phone.
"Agent West here. Ah! You needn't go into many details here, but I trust you've been successful so far? H met you already? Z should be on schedule to meet you at noon still. Where would you like him to meet you?"

Hourman says, " tell Zatarra to meet us at the Appleton city museum. There is more to this mystery and this may be a threat to more then Captain Desmo. Can you do me a favor and look up George Bentley and see if there is any dirt on him. Also there was a death of his wife and see if the government investigated this or this was a local matter please. Thanks again for the assistance as always. Also have you heard from Hawkgirl?"

"Which Appleton City Museum? The Dinosaur Museum of Natural History? Roger. No, I've not heard from H. I had the impression she's a rich socialite in real life; they never get up before noon. I shouldn't worry about her meeting you wherever you had planned to."
((So you two are heading to Bentley's house next, then coming back here to meet Zatara? While Hawkgirl would likely be looking for you at Bentley's house then...?))

"Why don't we get moving to the Bentley House, Hour-May," said Desmo. "We can meet Hawkgirl over there, and meet Zatara later back at the Dinosaur Museum."
