Thanking Doris again for the assistance, Rex heads back to the room. Then both heroes hop into the car and head over the Bentley's house. Rex does ask, " the police may not let us in. What is going to be the cover story."
(note to editor: the pharmacies we found in the warehouse do we still have them? if we do we will make a side stop and drop them off to a pharmacy or where they belonged too)

((Good that you remembered! Yes, you had both promised to donate the black market drugs, but had not followed through on it yet.))

Hourman comments," before we go to Bentleys since we have a little time, lets donate these drugs we confiscated to a pharmacy or hospital that can use them. "

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley House Until 10:15 am
Using Rex's car, they anonymously dropped off their contraband drugs at local pharmacies. That took some time, so it was over an hour later when they arrived at the Bentley House.
Captain Desmo had demurred from formulating a cover story on the way there, preferring to wing one when they arrived, if they needed one.
By mid-morning, it seemed that most of the investigation of the house was already complete. Only a single policeman stood guard at the front entrance to tell people this was a crime scene.*
((*Police tape would not be a thing until the 1960s. Are you going in as heroes, hoping your reputation was saved by the fireman's testimony, sneaking in, or tricking your way in with a false cover story?))

Rex drives around the block and remembers the other building with the fire escape and roof that was taller then the house. As they drive to it if possible to see if the second floor windows are open. Also is there a car in the driveway or just the police vehicle.

"Who knows what red tape that beat cop will throw at us!" said Desmo. "I agree. Let's push for another way in or pull an alarm in a nearby building to get him hopping out of the way."
Are there any office buildings nearby, where Desmo might possibly pull an alarm to distract the beat cop and get him away from the Bentley house?

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley House Until 10:50 am
There was a single police car parked along the same street, but no cars on the driveway of the house. The car there had a second officer sitting in it, drinking from a Styrofoam cup.
Sure enough, there was a public office building next door with an easily reached fire alarm. The fire alarm did not get either cop to next door, but the officer outside the front door heard the alarm and left to his car, where he and his partner took turns on the radio.
They still had an unobstructed view of the front entrance to the property, so our heroes had to climb the fence around the side of the property and come in at an angle to avoid being spotted.
((Is Hour-Man back in costume at this point?))
The house was deserted. They were able to head straight for the basement where they found - the steamer trunk had already been removed by the police. It must have contained evidence of something!
Since they were here anyway, they continued exploring. They turned up nothing in the basement and moved up to the unexplored ground floor. Again they were turning up nothing...until Captain Desmo noticed the carpeting was loose in one corner of the dining room. Checking under it, they found a concealed panel with a keyhole. And their key fit it! Inside the cubbyhole beneath they found a ledger book - a book stuffed with $2,000 in cash!

Rex as Hourman in costume smiles and says, " well looks like we found a lot of money for a rainy day. Probably the take from his racketeering. We need this for evidence or should we just donate this back to the business he stole from. I expect we will learn more from this ledger. Let's get out of here while we can"

"Hot dog! This is a great find good man!" said Desmo. "Why don't we check the ledger over, and from there decide what to do with the money? Too bad about the trunk. If it's important we might have to find a way to get our hands on it... I agree. I think we're done here. Let's go."

On the way out Hourman checks to make sure the heroes can get a clean get away and head back to the museum to meet Zatarra. Hourman does not have any connections with the police and does not want to get arrested again.

"Good thinking Hourman," said Desmo. "Just give me the signal and well head fast and quietly to your car."

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley House Until 11:30 am
Lurking behind the house, unobservable from the parked police car, or the fire engine and additional police car and ambulance that showed up in response to the pulled fire alarm, Captain Desmo and Hour-Man took turns reading the ledger for clues. It was very clear evidence of both crimes committed at George Bentley's direction, but also evidence of how Bentley had been skimming money from his underlings and this $2,000 seemed to represent the majority of his secret extra share.
Our heroes could, in theory, do the math and work out what percentage of the $2,000 needed to go back to which victims. Because their operation had been running for some time, the amount per victim would likely not amount to more than $100 each.
They weighed the option of doing this themselves, turning it over to the police to do it, or simply keeping the money (it would sure make rent in Appleton City easier to handle for some time!) while driving back to the museum.

Right on cue, the magic-user Zatara arrived -- not in a puff of smoke, but stepping out of a taxi. He wore a black suit and Fedora (not a tuxedo and tophat) and retrieved two duffle bags from the trunk of the taxi. "Good to see you again, Hour-Man. Captain Desmo? A pleasure to make your acquaintance (he said with a handshake). I feel underdressed! (he quipped, noting Hour-Man's costume and Captain Desmo's hat and goggles). Perhaps we should move somewhere more private and discuss what it is I can do to be of assistance."

Hourman shakes Zatara's hands and says " good to see you. Agent west has been a great help sending you and Hawkgirl. Hopefully Hawkgirl is here too. If you are hungry we can get some sandwiches and we can fill you in on the adventure so far as I am not sure what Agent West has told you." Hourman says, " captain we have the office we were using earlier right? "

"Sure, we could always go back there and we can fill you in, Zatarra," said Desmo. "It's been a heck of a ride with some lousy un-American thugs... Say... Hour-Man, we should get Hawkgirl to meet us as soon as she can..."

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl and Zatara) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Uptown Dinosaur Museum of Natural History Noon
Hour-Man tried calling Hawkgirl again, finally getting her on the phone.
There was a long pause, then Hawkgirl said, "...You've been up since when? Oh God, I didn't even think to set an alarm that early. I can meet you - where do you want me, and in or out of costume? Oh, and I may have an important clue I brought home from the house last night! "
After telling her, Hour-Man returned to the back room of the museum that Hobbs had found for them to use. Captain Desmo, Hobbs, Hour-Man, and Zatara all sat around an old oak table, surrounded by boxes of items not currently in any displays.
"...sounds serious," Zatara was saying after hearing about the assassins, the explosion, the kidnapping, and the racketeers. "If there is any mystical component to this Society of Assassins then some of my contacts might have some information about them. Unless you have a plan that needs me, I suppose I should spend today looking into that."
"So that's it?" Hobbs asked. "I've missed all the adventure so far, and all there is to do now is gather information?"
