Captain Desmo and Hour-ManTuesday, May 2, 1940 Appleton City Midtown FDAC Engine 54/Ladder 4/Battalion 9 Station House 2:20 PM Hour-Man had kept some of the evidence just so he could show it around. He produced it from a small bag hooked to his belt and showed it to David Anderson. "Well..." Anderson said, "I'm just a fireman, not a bomb specialist, but like I said, it seems likely this was the cause. I don't know why you would start a fire and plant a bomb, but I suppose it's not impossible that the fire came first. Just like a bomb, though, it couldn't have been accidental." That was all Fireman Anderson could contribute, other than his promise to go to the police after 5 and testify on the Heroes' behalf. Tuesday, May 2, 1940 Appleton City Midtown Townhome of Jack Smith 3:30 PM Captain Desmo and Hour-Man had beat Hobbs back to Jack's place, but Hobbs was here now with the tape recorder and he knew how to set it up. "And now we wait?" Hobbs asked. ((Do the Heroes heroically stand around and wait for a phone call, or risk checking out Bentley Wholesalers?))

(OOC yep that is the tape recorder I saw online, the old FBI ones.. ) (OOC:) IS this place a storefront where customers come in? or a wholesaler that is just a warehouse?
Hourman asks, " so do we want to check out the store during the day for a layout and then do a further search at night? Or do we wait for the call which the kidnappers may or may not call?"

"So, that's the magneto-tape device?" said Desmo. "Looks rather flimsy to me compared to a good out phonograph vinyl. But, if you say it works young man, I'll take your word for it. Look I think with Hobbs here with Jack, we should get a move on things and get a look at the store during the day for the general layout, and look later as you say."

Captain Desmo and Hour-ManTuesday, May 2, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley Wholesalers 4 PM Everyone on the commercial west side of Appleton was working a little harder about this time of day, trying to get everything done before the work day ended. Traffic was still relatively light on the streets. Hour-Man's town car easily navigated them to the address a phone operator gave them for the phone number on the business card. Once there, it was easy to spot Bentley Wholesalers, as it said BENTLEY WHOLESALERS in big letters on the side of it ((see picture, but imagine it says that instead of "Batesville Grocery Co.")). There were three cars and a truck parked on the street nearby, but no one was coming in or out of the building at present. There were quite a few windows on both stories of the brick building, including two open ones above the front door.

Hour-man says, " let me switch to my civilian attire and lets walk in like we are customer. I talked with the sales rep on the phone earlier. Lets get the lay of the land."

The Captain "disguised" as a civilian by simply leaving his aviator jacket in the car. His googles and aviator cap are still in place.

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man Tuesday, May 2, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley Wholesalers 4:05 PM
The front room was small, 10' x 20', with some merchandise on shelves and a stack of crates next to a door. The door led through an interior wall where a fat, tough-looking mugg was standing behind a window counter. A wire screen separated the man from the lobby.
The man stared at Captain Desmo and the civilian-attired Hour-Man as they walked around the small room, checking out the mundanities on display. Finally, the mugg behind the counter said, "We're closed."

Rex responds, " i was talking to a sales man by the name of Joe Smith who works here? I was hoping to speak with him about a large order. If this is closed when do you reopen? Do I need to make an appointment?" With these questions hopefully Captain Desmo can get a better look around

While Rex talked and hopefully distracted the "mugg", Desmo looked a little more carefully at what was being stalked on the shelves and the crates.

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man Tuesday, May 2, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley Wholesalers 4:10 PM
"You want to see Joe?" the man asked, surprised. "That's not how it usually works. Instead of you coming to see Joe, Joe comes to see you. But if you really want to see him...you can hang around and wait for a bit."
Captain Desmo noticed that a lot of the canned goods on the shelves were expired. And dusty.
Minutes passed, with the mugg behind the counter just standing there looking half-asleep, and being evasive about answering questions ("You can wait and ask Joe when you see him").
A long silent stretch was abruptly broken by a telephone ringing in a back room. The mugg didn't even acknowledge it at first, but as it kept ringing he slowly turned, walked to the back of the room, opened a door, and closed it behind him when he went through. The phone stopped ringing.
There was still a door, or a mostly covered window, between their half of the room and the half the mugg just left. There was a phone book and some scraps of paper on the counter on the other side.

Rex moves to the counter and asks, " so is he here? we can come back tomorrow? " Rex visually looks at the scrap of paper. He looks to the captain and whispers, " should we go now or come back?"

"Hang on a sec," muttered Desmo. He tried the door, and if it was unlocked, quickly rifled through the papers on the desk, before quickly coming back out. "Maybe we better come back tomorrow..."

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man Tuesday, May 2, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley Wholesalers 4:11 PM
Rex Tyler (aka Hour-Man) shouted loud enough that he could hopefully be heard in the backroom, but the mugg who had previously been at the front counter did not respond.
Captain Desmo tried the door that separated in front of the counter with behind the counter and found, to his surprise, that it was not locked. He came around and was able to either read the papers on the counter, or take the papers with him, or sneak to the back door of the room behind which the counter man was presumedly still on the phone.

Rex waits for a minute and then says, " well it is late we will be back tomorrow morning. " Rex then heads for the front door
