((Gah, lost this post earlier. Let's see if I can remember it all!)) Jean huddled by the soldier for warmth while The Leading Man and Henri Deselles were escorted past the checkpoint. Fort Snelling was like a small town. They rode up its main street in a car, past a chapel, theater, and hospital. When they reached the headquarters building, The Leading Man hopped out with Henri scrambling to keep up. The Leading Man explained their problem and the short version of their story to a sergeant, who referred them to an executive sergeant at the HQ entrance. "What hard evidence do you have that these people are Fifth Columnists after the Deselles?" Sgt. Colvin asked. "I'd be fine with the Deselles staying here for the rest of the day as our guests, but without hard evidence that someone is out to get them...I don't know what you expect us to do for them. I'll give you eight hours to come up with something concrete." (( rolls: 7+2, 5+2)) "It's not much, but it'll have to do," The Leading Man said. "Keep em close and toasty. But beware, they are like oil and water, those two." The Leading Man took a moment to talk to Henri before leaving. "Where did you go on vacation, take a bunch of pictures?" "Oh, oiu. It was a verrrr-y beautiful place..." After Henri answered, The Leading Man asked Sergeant Colvin for a copy of today's newspaper and as he rode the trolley back into the city, he read through it for any news about last night's events.

What had Clark and the other boys gone and gotten themselves mixed up in? They'd always been small timers before. Get him off you!"Thanks for the advice, kid," Orpheus Jack said through gritted teeth. He attempted to slam his head back into Clark's face and then take some swings at anybody in reach. Before Jack could headbutt Clark, Bruce was there, clamping his hand over Jack's mouth so he couldn't make any noise. Seriously, it was weird how tight Bruce's hand was clamped on. Bruce's muzzling was restricting Jack's full range of head movement, but Jack's hands were still free and he tried punching Bruce full in the chest. He hit -- but Bruce barely felt it! What kind of body armor were they wearing under their suits? Some kind of extra-light flak jacket? "Stop!" a police officer said at the mouth of the alleyway. Although it had only been 2 1/2 minutes since the fight started, a passerby must have alerted a nearby patrolman to the ongoing fight. "There are too many witnesses now," Clark said. "We must leave them and hunt them down later." It was not a blind alley. Clark let go of Jack and then Clark and Bruce started to move towards the far end of the alley and escape. Howard takes the ticket and moves around front and waitsays for his lovely assistant. Once she comes back they will exchange notes and then will head to thead airport. It was another five minutes before Veronica came out. She thanked the police officer and gave the man a kiss on the cheek. Back at Howard's car, Veronica filled him in on what he'd missed. "The man who was found dead in the driveway, shot through the window of his car, was Todd Littrick, Jean Deselles' secret lover. The man found tied up in the kitchen, but dead from being shot through the window, was Will McCall, the hitman. It seems like Will had broke into the house through the kitchen door, but lost a fight with someone and was tied up before being shot. There was also a separate scuffle in the sitting room, where a gun was shot, but didn't hit anyone. The police's best theory is that Todd hired two hit men to kill Henri Deselle. Will was sent in first, but failed to surprise the Deselles and they fought back in the sitting room. The fight moved to the kitchen, where they won and tied him up. The other hitman killed Will so he couldn't talk. Then the second hitman had a falling out with Todd, and killed him too. The second hitman might have been Liam Mortimer, a man who came by the house yesterday afternoon and asked the maid a lot of questions. "So what are we hoping to find out at the airport?"

Sergeant Colvin produced his own copy and handed it to The Leading Man before they left on the trolley. And there was an article about last night's events. It even made front page news! The Deselles were considered kidnapped and "Liam Mortimer" was wanted for questioning. There were other events in the paper too. A singer was murdered by a jealous rival at the Orpheum Theater last night! There was even a Henri Deselles connection, as this article pointed out that Henri was a generous patron of the theater. And there were mysterious shots fired outside the Minneapolis Great Northern Depot. Minneapolis was a dangerous place!

Howard says " first of all great job Veronica. I found this ticket stub from the airport in the bushess on the side of the house. Apparently this was from the hit man so the trip to the airport is probably not necessary. Henri is still not here and there really isn't any more clues to be had. Let's go back to the playhouse and tell Al. Let's get a bite to eat toor on the way back."

"Oh, oiu. It was a verrrr-y beautiful place..." ((I've been asked to follow up more on that part.)) Henri confirmed Jean's earlier story, about how they had been hiking in the mountains and taking pictures. He did not mention spelunkers and a cave, though, until The Leading Man prompted him. " Oui, 'zere were such men 'zere, now 'zat you mention it. I had 'zought nothing of it. You 'zink ...all 'zis iz' linked together?" "Do you remember anything else?" The Leading Man pressed him. "Think hard." Henri furrowed his brow in thought. Then his countenance brightened. "Yes, and..."

(( rolls: 2, 5, 15, 13)) Orpheus Jack knelt down in the alley trying to catch his breath. He turn his head one way and saw Clark and Bruce getting away, turned his head the other and saw the cops coming. "I gotta scram kid," he said. Wha-Andrew's question was cut off as in a rush he was returned to his own body. He could sense Jack back in his normal place inside his head. Looking down at his hands, the glow that had infused his body was gone. Everything was normal. Relatively speaking. Getting to his feet as the cops ran over, Andrew pointed to Agent Murphy. "This guy is a g-man. Those other two attacked him." He slumped against the wall, exhausted, his body drained by whatever he'd just experienced.

"But you need to get back into the fight Captain Avenger"! Suddenly Rick stepped away now alert and shocked. "YOU NEED TO WAKE UP!" And he did wake up -- just not where he expected to. Captain Avenger woke up in a hospital bed. He was still in costume. A nurse, who looked surprisingly like the girl from his dream, was standing in the room with him. "Oh good, you're awake," she said. "Your doctor will be in here shortly. What I can tell you is that you're at St. Mary's Hospital. It's 2 o'clock, on January 11, the same day you came in. And your nephew is waiting outside to see you." ((Captain Avenger is back up to 1 hit point.)) Andrew had come with the Captain to the hospital, partly to make sure he was all right, and partly to feel safer around more people, since those two super-mobsters said they would be hunting him. The lie about being Agent Murphy's nephew was to make sure Andrew would have visiting privileges.

Howard noticed Veronica was looking at him funny while they ordered lunch. When Howard confronted Veronica on the look, she asked, "Are we giving up on finding Henri and Jean? I never fancied you as a quitter..."

Later, once his streetcar got him back into the city, The Leading Man headed for a payphone and used the phone book to look up the address for the FBI in the Twin Cities. His missing man found, The Leading Man experienced a moment of confusion. Now he was a crusading detective, out to find justice wherever it had been hidden. The FBI and its incorruptible G-Men should be able to help him out.

Checking himself over, CA sat up in his bed and ask the nurse to bring in his 'nephew'. "Oh, and can I get a cup of coffee too?" Once the nurse gave him the ok, Andrew entered the g-man's room. "You feeling ok? Something wasn't normal about those guys. They were saying a lot of strange stuff, talking about hunting us down later. They were the guys from the wanted poster I was telling you about, but I didn't think they'd be so tough. Nothing about this adds up."

Andrew summed up what had happened. The kid seemed pretty bright. ((from Andrew's perspective: )) The police had checked up on Andrew's story, contacted the FBI, and were told that they really did have a masked agent working in the Minneapolis area. So the police had the hospital respect Captain Avenger's anonymity and left his costume on while examining him. Captain Avenger -- or Agent Murphy, if that was his real name -- looked weak, but tried not to show it. He had taken a merciless beating at the hands of those two super-mobsters.

His missing man found, The Leading Man experienced a moment of confusion. Now he was a crusading detective, out to find justice wherever it had been hidden. The FBI and its incorruptible G-Men should be able to help him out. Henri apparently had nothing else to add after all. It took the Sarge about 10 minutes to find a map of the Sawtooth Range, but once he unfurled it on a nearby wall for Henri to see, Henri could point out the area right away. "Zere. Zat canyon. On 'ze north side." ((to the left of the top of the red circle)) When The Leading Man asked about the FBI, he found his clever ideas blocked again. "The FBI's Minneapolis office was shut down almost two years ago," Sgt. Colvin explained. "No idea why." So The Leading Man borrowed a phone and paid for some long distance phone calling (($1.50)). He contacted the FBI's Chicago office and asked if there was at least an agent in the state who could help. He was told, cryptically, that if he contacted the Minneapolis police department they could help him, but this agent could not tell The Leading Man more over the phone about it. "Is there anything else the FBI can do to help me?" The Leading Man asked. "Yes, and..."

Cap thought grimly about his situation. Hell of a first outing, getting my jaw handed to me the first time, he pondered grimly. As for this kid Andrew, seems to be more to him that meets the eye. "So what where you thinking Andy, taking on anyone that big, I mean you got some moxie on the ball there but you could have been hurt?"
