It was a Monday morning and Andrew Montgomery woke up in his boyhood bedroom in his parents' house.
This was a condition his dead uncle Jack had repeatedly offered to fix, but it always involved claiming dirty gang money. So Andrew stayed here, waiting for his big break.
It had not come yesterday, when he failed to locate three wanted criminals -- though, to be fair, he'd only had time to search one place.
But Andrew did not wake up disappointed by any of this. He woke up happy -- because he might have a girlfriend soon! He looked at the business card with Joan's name and number on it, wondering how long he should wait before calling.
But there was something else he had to do today too. He had finally made up his mind about becoming a police officer. He was going to do it! Or at least go to the police station today and see if he could apply.
Andrew had an unusual amount of stuff on his plate today. Which to do first?

Andrew had been up half the night thinking about Joan. He just couldn't get her out of his head, and with Jack in there too it was starting to become a crowded place. He spent twenty minutes that morning, pacing back and forth in his room, debating whether or not to call, before giving in and decided he just had to do it. Jack stopped him before he got to the bedroom door.
Hang on there, kid. What do you think you're doing?
"I've got to call her, Jack."
Bad move. You don't want to look too eager. Women don't like that.
"So how long do I wait to call?"
A day.
"Tomorrow."
Tomorrow, then a day.
"So two days?"
Yeah, I guess you could call it that. Two days.
"Alright," Andrew said, just happy to have things settled. "I can do that."
He put Joan's card back in his pocket, resolving not to take it out again for two whole days. In the meantime, he needed to focus on another part of his future.
"Come on, Jack, we're going to the police station."
Been a while since I've heard that one...

It was mid-morning when Andrew arrived at the almost cathedral-like Minneapolis Police Station. The five-story structure was an imposing edifice, no doubt signifying the unstoppable force that was law and enforcement within the city limits. Yet, when Andrew was actually inside -- for the first time ever -- he had the impression it was seriously undermanned, and most of the police officers he saw seemed very young or very old. Andrew shared with the old man at the front desk that he wanted to become a police officer. "Good for you," the old man said flatly. "Here." He produced some forms and a pen. "This is your application for the police academy. If you're accepted, you'll report to the Minnesota Board Of Peace Officer Standards and Training in Saint Paul, for four months of education and training. At that time, you would be able to take the Peace Officer Licensing--" While the old man droned on in his prepared speech, a fat, middle-aged man in uniform came over to them, but was staring straight at Andrew. "Andrew Montgomery? I thought it was you! I'm Dustin? Dustin Riggenberg? Detective Riggenberg now. Don't recognize me? Well, I know your family. I even met you once, when you were younger." Dustin turned suddenly on the old man. "So this fine young man wants to be a cop? And you want to tie him up in police academy for four months?" "Those are procedures..." the old man protested. "Look at the shape he's in," Dustin continued. "We need him out walking a beat. Andrew," he said, turning to Andrew again, "let me talk to the chief. I'll see if I can talk him into making an exception and letting you apprentice on active duty with me." Dustin walked off, without waiting for an answer. I remember Dustin, Jack said in his head. You know he's dirty, right?

Andrew gave the old man one last glance, turned away and hustled after Dustin. He probably was dirty, Jack would know, but if he could get Andrew on the fast track to becoming a police officer, then Andrew was going to jump at that chance. Maybe Andrew should have felt guilty about letting a bad guy grease the wheels for him, but things were happening too fast to think it through. Later, once Andrew was established, he could fix things from the inside.

Maybe Andrew should have felt guilty about letting a bad guy grease the wheels for him, but things were happening too fast to think it through. Later, once Andrew was established, he could fix things from the inside. Andrew waited outside the office of Chief Kaepernick while a crooked cop spoke on his behalf. Dustin was in there for about 20 minutes and Andrew had no idea what was being said until Dustin opened the door to leave. Then Andrew overheard "I don't have time for this with Washington breathing down my neck!" Dustin had Andrew get up from the bench he'd been on and put an arm around Andrew's shoulder. He was uncomfortably in Andrew's personal space when he said, "Sorry, Andrew, but the chief isn't warming up to the idea as fast as we'd like. Give me a week to work on him. In the meanwhile, you go ahead and start through the police academy route, and I'll get you out of there as fast as I can. Okay? And don't you be a stranger! Maybe we can meet up for dinner tonight. Catch up on family, okay?" (( roll: 5))

>(He goes to the station as Rick) Or so was the plan for the next day. That night, Agent Rick Murphy (aka Captain Avenger) took a cab to the fancy, 12-story Nicollet Hotel that soared over downtown...figuring his expense account on this case would reimburse him later. After a very good night's sleep, Rick had pancakes, coffee and a cigarette in the morning for breakfast. Then he headed out to see Chief Kaepernick. "Good morning, Agent Murphy," the chief said. "Want some coffee?" After some small talk about how Rick was liking Minneapolis so far (the chief really seemed to want to know), Rick got down to business. "It's true," the chief said. "I have been asked to put a police detail on the train station in two days, but I was not told who was coming. It's all very hush-hush at present and we're not supposed to let the papers know until the morning of." They were interrupted by an officer barging in on them. "What can I do for you, Dustin?" Amazingly, Chief Kaepernick kept a FBI agent waiting for the next 20 minutes while this officer talked up a young man waiting outside. This Andrew Montgomery was a "wonderful young man", an "upstanding civic citizen", and would be a boon to their "understaffed" police force if he was allowed to circumvent police academy and train directly under this Officer Dan Riggenberg. Honestly, Rick could not understand why the chief was even entertaining this notion. Did he let all his officers circumvent rules, or tell their commanding officer how he should run things?

"Uh, Chief I think we have more important stuff to deal with then some who kid wants to be boy detective, he said with a note of irritation on his voice, but if it's that important Officer then be all means send him in" he said spreading his hands out.

"Uh, Chief I think we have more important stuff to deal with then some who kid wants to be boy detective, he said with a note of irritation on his voice, but if it's that important Officer then be all means send him in" he said spreading his hands out. At the Minneapolis Police Station, Chief Kaepernick sent Officer Dustin Riggenberg out of his office with "I don't have time for this with Washington breathing down my neck!" Andrew overheard it. It was a curious statement and Andrew was thinking of asking Dustin about it. But, inside the office, Agent Murphy said to send him in. So the chief opened the door and shouted, "Andrew, get in here!" When Andrew Montgomery and Rick Murphy met face-to-face -- they recognized each other from the train station yesterday! ((This post is for Captain Avenger AND Orpheus Jack to respond to. Speak to each other now!))

Arching up his eyebrow, Rick realized that this was the kid who stood up to bully at the train station. Well, he thought, the kids got moxie. "Okay so this is one that all this fuss is about." I remember seeing you at the train station, how's it going"? He said extending his hand.

"Yes sir, very well, sir," Andrew said, his voice cracking a little as he took Rick's hand and shook it. "I just want to do all that I can to fight all the injustices in the world. There's just too much of it...too many bullies, picking on the little guys. The other day I was at the train station, watching for any of the guys on the wanted posters. I thought I could do my part like that. If I can do my part better on the police force, though, then that's what I want."

Howard slept like a baby that night -- worn out, but content and at peace with his good deeds. The next morning, Howard practically bounced out of bed to greet the new day. He was staying at the Hotel Andrews, a small hotel right next door to Young Tailors, and just up the street from the Orpheum. Veronica had the room next door to his. One of the first things that Howard did was go down to the lobby and check today's copy of the Minneapolis Star-Journal. Sure enough, there was an article (page 2) of the murder at the Orpheum last night. Detective Larson was credited with solving the case, but there was a reference to Howard Feinstein, The Cabalist, assisting him in getting a confession from Roscoe Ball. Howard figured the free publicity would help sooth Al B. Keith's grieving from for the loss of his star, though it would do little to console June McCroon, who lost her fiancee. Howard mulled over which of the two of them he should check on today, and weighed that against whatever other plans he had for that morning... Attachments:

Andrew went for a walk with Rick, but it seemed the young man had screwed up to the limit of his courage and was now quietly intimidated by this private walk with a G-Man. It seemed it was up to Rick to carry the conversation from here. ((I know Jack is back from GenCon, so I'm not going to cover for him this week.))

Howard gets breakfast in the inn. As he finishes his coffee he will go to the theatre as he does not know where June is staying. He does check in on Veronica to see if she wants to go to the theatre with Howard and shows her the article. It was an extended stay-type hotel, so Howard had a mini-kitchen and made his own breakfast. Soon, he was refreshed and able to visit Veronica's room. "Morning, boss!" Veronica said, with a yawn. She was still in a nightgown with a robe over it, her hair in curlers. "Come on in. Pretty exciting last night, wasn't it? Whoa -- are we in the paper?" She took the paper and tore through it. "Hey, wait a minute -- you went back and solved the case last night without me? You could have at least made sure I was there in time for when the cameramen showed up. I could'a had my picture in the paper!" She smacked the paper hard and tossed it on the floor. "I would have killed for a chance to be in the paper!" She agreed to return to the theater that morning, in case there were more news people there. "But give me an hour to get ready, I gotta look good in case there's cameras." It was 10:30 by the time they made it to the Orpheum. There was no show that night, but there were still people loitering out front. Al B. Keith greeted them in the lobby. "Howard, glad you're back." Al looked as upset as he did yesterday still. "I swear I think we're cursed. First Sid, now....You won't believe it, Howard, but one of our biggest backers has gone missing! Henri Deselles was taken from his home last night."
