Gabby fired at the shiny thing in case it could be the powerful freeze ray, and ducked back behind the car and looked for an opportunity to run to the second floor.

Hour-Man (+ Spectre) Friday May 26, 1940, 1:58 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street
When Hour-Man heard the voice say "second floor" he snapped into action! He ran out of the room, turned back south, and began heading to the staircase. In his rush he thought for a moment he had to go up, until he remembered he was on the third floor and had to go down.
Leaving the Spectre, the police, and their prisoners behind, Hour-Man made it down the stairs to the second floor landing, where the stairs stopped. There were three exits, a doorway to the north, a doorway to the east, and a door the south. The doorways opened up onto corridors, with the east corridor being an outside-facing corridor with sunlight windows. Hour-Man recalled that of the escaped prisoners, two ran north and four ran east.

Gabby Friday May 26, 1940, 1:55 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street, outside
Gabby took a shot, but only hit the window ledge and then couldn't see the glint of light anymore.
Right after that, gunfire erupted from the third floor and Gabby ducked back down. But the gunfire wasn't directed outside; it was all inside the building. Then he heard screams coming from up there, loud enough to be heard this far, and then the building went silent again. It all took just over a minute, during which time Gabby couldn't actually see far enough inside the third floor to know what was happening. But it had created a lull during which it seemed safe to rush to the front doors!
Gabby raced out from behind cover, sprinted the distance, leaping some short steps, before reaching the revolving doors leading into a lobby behind a glass wall. Detective Sergeant Carey was running behind him!
Nothing was blocking the revolving door and Gabby could be the first one through, unless he wanted to slow down and see what Carey did.

Gabby slowed a little gun still drawn, so he could see what was inside before heading in the revolving door. "Golly gee Carey!" he said half to himself and half to Detective as he looked in. "What the Dickon's going on in there?"

Gabby Friday May 26, 1940, 1:56 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street, outside
The front-glass windows of the lobby were not polarized, allowing Gabby (and Carey) to see into a lobby area 40' wide and 60' deep. There was seating, a receptionist desk, rows of potted plants, a large clock, and a small fountain, with faux-marble flooring and a 20' high ceiling that fluorescent light tubes hung from. It looked, in fact, like any modern office building lobby, except for the fact that it was completely deserted on a Friday afternoon.
They both passed, one at a time, through the revolving door, their footsteps echoing unnervingly loud in the spacious room. The desk had both a working phone and an intercom with a buzzer button on it, but little else. And from there the building became gradually weirder. There was no signage, nothing denoting any businesses were actually operating in the building. Or even where to find stairs or an elevator. Instead, there were double doors in the west and south walls, and a single door in the east wall, none of which were marked in any way.
Being extra cautious, they began listening at doors, starting with the single east door. Gabby heard what sounded like a distant pounding coming from somewhere behind that door.

"Holy crackers, mate!" exclaimed Gabby to Detective Carey. "What do you reckon that is through the single door? A cry for help or some kind of zombie Desmo told me about? Haven't we got ourselves in a stew now! Hmm... Let's open it carefully and have a look see. Come on you first, Carey! After all you are the detective. I'll cover you with my gun. Three, two, one, go!"

Hour-ManFriday May 26, 1940, 2:01 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street Hour-Man decided to proceed very cautiously from here. He did not risk opening the south door, yet, but he listened to it and heard nothing. He next looked cautiously out into the corridors to north and east and saw a brightly lit but deserted corridor to the east, while to the north he saw the door almost directly across from him was ajar and he thought he heard the sound of people moving around in that room.

GabbyFriday May 26, 1940, 1:57 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street The door opened up onto a narrow corridor that ran east. There were no zombies, but there was a door to the left up ahead, then a wider side corridor to the right, before the end of the corridor, which opened into a room wherein Carey - and Gabby behind him - could see stairs going up. The corridors were silent, but the wider side passage was darker, and had a ceiling light that flashed off and on intermittently and felt somehow ominous. "I think we can make it to the stairs," Carey whispered.

Carey and Gabby (in that order) raced down the corridor, easily clearing the door on the left, from which no menace emerged. However...
When they reached the intersection, they could see that there were two weird people who looked grotesque, like albino corpses with red eyes, just 20' south of the intersection.
Carey froze...

"Fire and retreat!" yelled Gabby. "These zombies can't be killed with easily."
Gabby fired a few rounds then pulled Carey back with him into a run retreating the way they came.

Carey unfroze when he felt the tug on his arm. They both fell back, Gabby getting off his first wild shot before they rounded the corner.
The "zombies" followed, Gabby shooting one of them before they reached the door. The bullet pierced the man's stomach, but didn't slow the man down appreciably. Carey reached the door first (since he wasn't slowing down to shoot) and flung it open. He closed the door behind them, just as the "zombies" reached the door.
The door opened into the hallway, so there was no easy way to block the door to keep it from opening.
"I don't think I can hold them long!" Carey said as he held onto the handle of the rattling door with both hands.
