"Sweetheart," said Desmo to the Doctor. "Cut the attitude. I stuck my neck out for you up on the roof. The least you can do is help us get the papers, and try to do something good with your genius to help the mess it all caused. Now we'll go the safe way as my colleague said."

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (+ Spectre)Friday May 26, 1940, 1:40 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street "Fine, we'll go the long way around to my lab," she said, and Dr. Arman spun the train of people around (not literally) to head in the opposite direction. Now they went to the far south door on the far east side of the same east-west corridor ((see map below)) and opened it, revealing a landing to a stairwell, littered with junk and debris. There was a large window facing outside at the landing, just as there was at the end of the corridor, and by natural sunlight both our heroes saw something small moving in the debris at the top of the stairs.

"Hold it, everyone," said Desmo pointing. "Dr. Arman, what is that?"

"Ohh...that might be Leggy!" Dr. Arman said. "One of my side experiments that escaped its cage."
A big, fat, ugly centipede, over a foot long, crawled out of a junk pile, just two feet away from our Heroes!

Desmo prepared to slash and gouge this worm-like carrion with dagger he always kept in his boot.

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (+ Spectre) Friday May 26, 1940, 1:41 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street
Hour-Man was the first with his sword out and he lopped Leggy in half as soon as it reared up.
The parade of criminals started up again and descended the staircase one level down. From here they could hear muffled gunfire coming from somewhere on the third floor, likely the north side of the building that faced the street where the police siege was taking place.
The stairs continued down to the second floor, but not to the first floor. On this level, there was an open doorway on the east wall that accessed a sunlight-lit north-south corridor on the outside east wall of the building. There were also doors to the north and south.
"The fastest way to the lab is through the north door," Dr. Arman said.

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (+ Spectre) Friday May 26, 1940, 1:42 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street
One of the policemen advanced to the north door and opened it cautiously. Then he shouted "Good Lord, what is that thing?" and ran back behind Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman, the door left open behind him.

"You call yourself a policeman?" bellows Desmo at the cowering officer pulling him beside Desmo and Hourman. "Now stand beside us like a man and prepare to fight!"
"And Dr. Armand, how about you tell us what we will see each and every time BEFORE we enter a new area? What the Dickens are we up against now?"
Desmo still has his dagger at the ready.

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (+ Spectre) Friday May 26, 1940, 1:43 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street
Dr. Arman did not answer about what the dickens they were up against, but only smiled smugly.
"We cannot trust Arman not to make this as challenging as possible," the Spectre said. "I should have bent her to our will sooner." He held a gloved hand to her chin and said, "Now, look into my eyes. My will is your will..."
Dr. Arman held onto her glasses and said, "No, you look into my eyes. My will is your will..."
While the two of them struggled, one of the hoodlums said, "Doc...you didn't let...it out, did you?"
"Oh dear..." Walter said, while his cats all huddled up around him (or were they forming a defensive perimeter?).
While they stood their ground and waited, something did come to the open door from the adjoining room. A giant, 9' tall, leaned into the smaller doorway. He had green-gray mottled skin and was incredibly muscular, but misshapen, his anatomy seeming to be all wrong. He wore denim shorts for modesty, but was otherwise naked, and had wicked long claws and big pointy teeth...

The Cap scowled at the frightened policeman and made sure he was right beside him still keeping a firm grip on his shoulder.
"Officers," he instructed in a loud voice to the police behind him. "Quickly form a line beside me, men. We can hold that thing off, and make a retreat if necessary. Now, everyone quickly take off the release on your guns and prepare to shoot on my orders... Gentlemen, ready... aim... and..."

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (+ Spectre) Friday May 26, 1940, 1:44 pm Philadelphia Corner of S 21st Street and Lombard Street
"I don't know...I don't think it can..." Walter stammered.
Captain Hawkman found the two policemen were not up to the task of lining up beside him to shoot, one of them was shaking too bad to aim and the other just stood frozen with fear.
One of the handcuffed hoodlums broke for the stairwell down. "Come on!" he yelled to the others.
Captain Hawkman sprayed bullets from his automatic, but his hand wasn't steady either as the monster charged him, and only one bullet landed for a light injury ((5 hp)).
The monster reached Captain Hawkman and attacked with tooth and claw. Despite the good captain's efforts to block with his wings, the monster drew blood with his claws ((7 dmg)), then picked up Captain Hawkman and was about to start eating him....
Meanwhile, the Spectre won the contest of wills, with perhaps predictable results. He spun Dr. Arman around and said, "Command that troll to stop!"
"Spot, heel!" Dr. Arman called out.
The "troll" stopped attacking and looked at Dr. Arman, a long tongue wagging past its long fangs now. It dropped Captain Hawkman, who fell to the ground, motionless.
