"Anyone got a shovel?" said Desmo getting anxious. "Maybe we can pry this open..."

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman Sunday, May 7 1940 Appleton City Greenwood Cemetery 2:05 pm
This was a cemetery, so of course there were going to be shovels nearby. Indeed, as soon as Captain Desmo said that out loud he remembered the gravediggers on break they had passed earlier.
Rex and Captain Desmo went to find them and, while they had left the spot there they were resting earlier, they had not gone far away yet. And two of them were carrying their shovels with them.
"Now, what do you need my shovel for...?" one of them, a Negro male in his 40s, asked suspiciously when Captain Desmo asked to borrow it.

Rex almost wishes Agent bart was here who could flash his government badge and this could easily have been resolved. Rex says " around a grave my friend here wants to plant a couple of roses so it can grow. It is a tribute to his dear friend and we brought the roses but forgot a shovel. It will just take a few minutes. " If this gets trickier Rex does have some cash on him

There wasn't even a long pause. "I understand that," the man said and handed his shovel over. "I won't tell anyone. Just bring it back here when you're done and lean it up on that tree."
Five minutes later, they were back at the Chinese mausoleum, trying to lift the center slab with the shovel as a lever on one side. Rex was feeling around for a good spot to slide the shovel under when they both heard a click.
They both jumped back in case it was a trap, but it wasn't; the shovel had hit a concealed switch on the side of the slab that caused it to swing down on concealed hinges. Below the opening could now be seen steps heading underground.

Rex thanks the man and agrees to put back the shovel where they found this. Upon finding the switch Rex comments, " we can explore now or get the others and explore it when they all arrive. This could be possibly a secret lair. " Rex remembers the last adventure with the cultists.

"Why don't we look around a little bit carefully, but not go too far," said Desmo. "Then we can tell the others and see if they'll join us..."

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman Sunday, May 7 1940 Appleton City Greenwood Cemetery Catacombs 2:21 pm
The two Heroes slid down through the opening, one at a time, onto the landing at the top of the stairs. Leaving the trap door open, hanging from its hinges on the side of the landing, the Heroes used natural light from above to see the bottom of the stairs below. It looked like they would be about 15' underground where the stairs ended.
From here, the 10' wide underground, stone passage went north for 30'. In those last 10' was a T-intersection, where the passage turned left and right. There was no one down here. This was not brand new construction; it was at least decades old and was as dusty and grimy as one would expect from an underground passage decades old.

Hour-man looks for a torch sconce if possible and will light it. If there is no torch sconce he says, " back in the car I do have a flashlight. Shall we look some more?"

"Yes, let's look a little more," said Desmo.

There were no torch sconces or torches - though, closer to the intersection, there had been something screwed into the wall 6' off the floor, but it had long since been removed.
They were pretty far from where they parked, so it was an 18-minute round-trip walk to get the flashlight.
When they returned, the entrance to the catacombs had been closed! Someone was surely now on the alert for them. Did they still dare go down?

Hour-man comments, " well that was fun. Unless the groundskeeper found this open, anybody that is down their might be ready for us. We could go get the others and go back in. Also if this is natural catacombs maybe there is a second entrance. "
( Rex who lives in this city tries to think geographically and direction they were headed if there was a construction site nearby or a possible side entrance could be. Since this is natural catacombs it would not connect to a sewer access would it?)

"Let's gather the others, and maybe see if there is another way in as you say there might be," said Desmo.
((OOC: I'm on a flight from Tokyo to NYC tomorrow to see family. Might be out for a day or 2....))

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (and Zatara, Bart Regan, Spectre) Sunday, May 7 1940 Appleton City Dinosaur Museum of Natural History 7:00 pm
There had been no construction site or obvious sewer entrance in the cemetery, but there were plenty of mauseoleums, and there was no telling how many of them led down into the catacombs...
"Unless you had just asked someone who worked at the cemetery," Bart Regan suggested later, when they were discussing the matter at the museum. "Still no word from Sandman, by the way. It's four of us, if Zatara returns empty-handed...or empty of Spectres, anyway." Also, Bart found a map of the cemetery in the museum, clearly showing every walking path in the cemetery, but not revealing the entrances to the catacombs.
At the stroke of 7, Zatara walked into the museum library. "I am not alone," he said.
"He is not," came the eerie voice of the Spectre, elsewhere in the room.
"We still have five hours left until you are supposed to be at the cemetery," Zatara said to Captain Desmo. "Shall we wait, or try to catch the assassins in their lair unprepared?"

"It would be helpful to at least know a little more of what is down there...", said Desmo. "First though, if they are already on to us, I better see if they left a note at my place.... They might be angry and I'm want to make sure Hobbes will stay safe..."

Hourman agrees to check on Hobbes unless we had to check on him waiting for zatarra, If not we do a quick drive back and then proceed into the crypt. Hourman still has the shovel
((sorry for the delay training in new job and christmas stuff and slightly preparing for the bad weather))
