Zatara added to the conversation: "And what of The Spectre? Do we still wish to recruit him now?"

"Yes, no doubt this the time call him, old boy," said Desmo in agreement.

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (and Bart Regan, Zatara) Sunday, May 7 1940 Appleton City Captain Desmo's Apartment
It was 11:30 am.
"I propose a brief division of labor, then," Zatara said. "I'll try to bring us the Spectre. You two meet Bart at the museum. We'll rendezvous at the museum at 4 o'clock and I'll give you a progress report, plus we can strategize more then. Good luck."

Rex Tyler lurked by the entrance of the museum, since he was the one who knew Bart Regan on sight. Bart was running a little late, but he came bounding up the steps, wearing a dark blue suit and black tie, and gave Rex a hearty handshake.
"Sorry I've been busy, Rex. The government sends me where they will, you know. But my time is yours now. Where's everyone else?"
Bart was led into the library, where Captain Desmo was waiting with some tea. Bart was shown the letters and quickly caught up to speed.
"Yeah, it sounds like a trap and I don't like the thought of you going in alone. I don't know anything about this Spectre, but I trust Zatara's judgment. My fiance, Sally, will be joining me here in three days. She's a fellow spy - but I'm afraid three days from now will do us no good. I know Doris can't make it to join us. That only leaves convincing the Sandman to join us in the next 12 hours. He should be in Pittsburgh..."

"It means a lot you could join us, Bart," said the Captain. "Now that they've got me here across the world, they're trying to stage a checkmate against us. What I hoping this Spectre fellow and Zantana can cook up is a way to make it look like I'm alone. Others could be there, but hidden with magic parlor tricks of theirs. But we'll have to wait on that for now... Once we get everyone together, I'd say we scope out the cemetery and get a lay of the land to make a plan..."

Hourman nods in agreement and says, " lets hope the cemetary is large enough and has many places. This also gives the team enough time to see if the cult has a back up plan too. Bart do you know Sandman's number?"

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (and Bart Regan, Zatara) Sunday, May 7 1940 Appleton City Captain Desmo's Apartment
"The Sandman is the most secretive of all of us," Bart said. "Only Doris West is trusted with his true identity. We can leave a message with her, but there's no guarantee she will get it today, let alone have time to contact the Sandman for us. Still..."
Bart made a long distance call to Washington D.C. Captain Hawkman thought about the phone bill the museum was going to hand to them one of these days.
"I'll have to wait here in case Doris can call me back," Bart said. "I saw the museum only stays open until 5:30, so I can only wait that long. I can rendezvous with the two of you at that cemetery after that with any information I got. And Zatara with his friend, if they make it back here in time."
Appleton City Greenwood Cemetery 1:15 pm
The cemetery covered acres and acres of forested hills, dotted with markers ranging from headstones to statuary and monuments to crypts and mausoleums. Many of Appleton's past elite were buried here from bygone days.
There was a funeral going on at the same time Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman arrived to reconnoiteur... ((in costume, plainclothes, or some disguise...?))

Captain Desmo didn't worry about his appearance and wore his aviator suit. He assumed that a most would think he was paying respects to a "fellow" soldier.
"Guess should keep our distance from the funeral and look around," said Desmo. "Maybe the large statues and family crypts or mausoleums have some sort of clue..."

As spacious as the cemetery was, it was easy to avoid the large, grieving family at the funeral service.
Greenwood was designed like a public park. It had thousands of trees spread out over its hundreds of acres. It had widely varied topography, reaching its summit at Battle Hill. A sign there said it was the highest point in Brooklyn (216 feet above sea level) and the site of an important action during the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776. A bronze Minerva statue gazed towards the Statue of Liberty across Appleton Harbor from here. Elsewhere were rolling hills, dales, several ponds, and buildings. There was a three-story chapel and three shelters (two for women and one for men) in the style of Gothic Revival, Italian villa, and Swiss chalet respectively. Each side of the cemetery had a huge entry gate, but one gate was flanked by a visitor's lounge and gatekeeper's residence.
The site contained hundreds of thousands of graves, but also monuments and mausoleums designed in the styles of Classical, Egyptian, Gothic, and Romanesque. Only one mausoleum was of a Chinese style that might appeal more to Ahkim's Mongolian tastes.
There was a group of mixed race gravediggers loitering behind a shrubbery-lined hillock, smoking and drinking, to talk to. There was also a group of refined-looking older ladies in the Swiss-styled ladies shelter. The visitors center was manned, as was the gatekeeper's residence.

"Do you see that Oriental looking mausoleum?" said Desmo after they took a quick stroll to take in the lay of the land. "Let's check that one out. It feels like a place Akhim would feel right at home in - when he dies..."

Hourman advises, " Captain lets rescue your friend and try to avoid killing anyone. Hawkgirl entrusted you with those wings and I know your friend is important to you. We are not militarized and our task is to bring the cult to justice so they can pay for their crimes, whether charged locally or federally. Lets check out the mausoleum and try not to look suspicious. "

The mausoleum was made to look like the Ming Tombs, but scaled down to 12' tall. It had large archways to allow entrance from three sides. Inside were two human statues and two foo lion statues, each in an opposing corner. Four marble benches sat in a square in the center of the floor. There was no one inside the place.

"Can't tell much about what we're looking at," said Desmo a little frustrated. "If this is where Akhim wants me, there's got to be a way down... some kind of lever or opening."
Desmo looked closely at the human statues even tracing his fingers over some of the detailed stonework, and suggested the others look around carefully.

That there was likely some sort of trap door in the floor was barely concealed - there was a square slab, 6' on a side, in the dead center of the open mausoleum. After 10 minutes of searching, though, neither could find a secret opening mechanism anywhere in the mausoleum.
There was still 10 hours left until Captain Desmo was supposed to be here.
