Hour-Man Thursday, May 4, 1940 Appleton City Bannerman Chemical Labs
It was ...interesting, being back at work after two intense days of adventure. Rex Tyler was on break, making smalltalk at the water cooler about how Reese was staying at shortstop on the Dodgers - words that Rex barely understood the context for. Their next game was going to be in Pittsburgh. Should Rex watch a ball game sometime, to better understand the culture of this time period?
A small parade of suited men came walking down the hallway past the water cooler, with men in front of and behind Mr. Bannerman like bodyguards. Mr. Bannerman stopped in front of Rex and all the men around him stopped with him.
"Rick. Are you the one who's working on that non-nutritive cereal varnish? I've got to give a speech to a trade group. I'd like to mention it. Write up a brief summary and have it to me by the end of the day. Layman's terms. None of that inside, nonsense jargon that nobody understands."

Captain Hawkman Thursday, May 4, 1940 Appleton City Apartment of Captain Desmo and Hobbs
Captain Desmo had a lot on his plate, but his highest priority had been getting Hobbs home from the hospital this morning. Hobbs had his arm in a sling, having taken a bad shoulder injury from the crowbar.
"Some first outing on adventure, eh?" Hobbs said. "At least we won. And I get a day off work out of it to boot. But that doesn't mean I have to stay here resting all day. I know you wanted me to get that telegram out, and I promise to do that this afternoon. Is there anything else you'd like me to do?"

One the day ends Rex will go home and turn on the radio to get the broadcast of the baseball game. Right now seeing the men he says to his boss, " I can get you a report on your desk in common terms." When the boss walks away he says he remembers a movie in his time period past to quote to the body guards, " Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, kiss my ass. Kiss his ass. Happy Hanukkah."

Rex's fellow employees gave him looks that ranged from confused to angry as Rex went from off-season holiday greetings to cussing. His coworker, Brian, couldn't believe his ballsiness. "I sure hope you don't get fired for that," he told Rex after. Hour-Man Thursday, May 4, 1940 Appleton City Apartment of Rex Tyler
There were no Dodgers games to listen to that night, but there was a Yankees game. It was being broadcast out of Chicago, where the Yankees were facing the White Sox. For the most part, Rex could follow the game, but he knew this would be a lot easier once television becomes commonplace and he could watch a game with his eyes. He tried to imagine the game from the descriptions, but felt he was missing nuances still because he had never seen a game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers, Yankees, and Giants all had out-of-state games this week. If he was going to solve his baseball problem, he would need to get creative.

Rex will check the newspaper when the next game is in town and ask is the captain wants to see a us ball game. He will have to travel to yankee stadium to do this.

"Don't worry about a thing fellow," said Desmo to Hobbes. "You rest and get well. What you showed is moxy. Other men would have been cowards, but you went down like a champ. Wonder what your Lieutenant would think of you off in Jerusalem now? Probably worship you like a hero I say!"
Desmo got him home, and filled Jack and Marie in on the details, and wondered if either of them could check in on Hobbes from time to time.
Hawkman put a call into Rex and Zatarra to arrange meeting up the next day.
"A ball game...?" said Desmo. "Well if Hobbes is feeling.... Hold on a second..."
Desmo to Hobbes: "Are you sure it's alright? Well if you say so..."
"Ok pal," said Desmo. "A ball park it is... let me know when.... And when do you want to meet with Zatarra...? Oh, have him come too? Okay..."
Desmo also later decided to take care of the telegram himself to send to good ol' Gabby...
And... what the heck was he going to do about the lieutenant's plane at the airport now that he had wings of a sort now...?.

((Oops! I read that wrong; the Yankees games that week were NOt away games!))
Hour-Man Thursday, May 4, 1940 Appleton City Yankee Stadium
Hour-Man looked into the matter further and found that there was another game tonight, Yankees vs. White Sox, at Yankee Stadium. As Rex Tyler, he went out to try to acquire tickets to the game. But he was only able to acquire one ticket - the very last one! Or so it seemed...
A man in a hat and trenchcoat was calling over to Rex. "Psst! Hey, buddy, you want some more tickets to the game? I can let you have some...but they'll cost you $5 each."
When tickets were normally $1.10!

Captain Hawkman Thursday, May 4, 1940 Appleton City
Jack and Marie agreed to both come over and visit Hobbs in a half-hour or so - but they were coming together. "I'm not letting Marie out of my sight," Jack said.
At the nearest International Telegram office, as Captain Desmo (sans wings), CD composed a message for Gabby that would fill him in on everything he was missing out on ((feel free to share the wording, if you'd like, or maybe just explain if anything gets left out.))
When he got back, Jack and Marie were already there and were in the kitchen making lunch. It smelled good!
After some banter, CD got on the phone and rang up Zatara.
"Zatara speaking. Ah, yes, we should meet and discuss what else we can accomplish in town. I have already put some feelers out there for information on your ...problem. If you wanted to meet today, it would need to be soon. I am assisting another magician with his act tonight. I have given up the stage myself, but have many friends who still perform."

"I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOU PAL STOP I MADE IT SAFE TO NY AND MET A GOOD TEAM STOP WE STOP SOME DANGEROUS CROOKS STOP STILL ON THE TRAIL OF AKHIM STOP COULD REALLY USE A HAND WITH YOUR BROOKLYN KNOW HOW STOP WOULD LOVE YOU TO COME STOP BUT USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT STOP THE WAR IS DIFFICULT NOW STOP BEST REGARDS CD STOP"
With the telegram sent Desmo felt a wave of relief. Too bad they charged so much for each and every word! It was hard to get at more than the bare essence of happenings. But at least it was guaranteed to reach him safely.
Sometime later on the phone to Zatara after lunch with Jack, Marie, and Hobbes....
"Zatara, I'd be glad to meet you myself," said Demo. "And I'll ring Rex up too. He's asked us both to go to a baseball game tonight as well, but I'll let him know you have plans. I'm not sure if baseball has to do with any lead he's following or not... What time did you say? 2 o'clock you say? That's in 30 minutes... Ok, well, how about the coffee place across from the Museum... You know the one by Hobbes' work - I think it's called - Hot Shots Coffee. Ok... I'll see you then. Bye."

Hour-Man and Captain Hawkman (and Zatara) Thursday, May 4, 1940 Appleton City Hot Shots Coffee
Coffee shops had already been a staple of Appleton City for decades. This was neither the best nor the worst, but it was conveniently located, and so three of the most remarkable men in all of Appleton City convened on it and sat in a booth together. Hour-Man and Zatara came in plainclothes; Captain Hawkman was without wings, but wearing his customary helmet and goggles.
"It's still early," Zatara said, getting right down to business, "but the Society of Assassins have a mystic component to them, a sub-order if you will, called the Green Death. Because of the Green Death, the Society of Assassins is on the RADAR, so to speak, of true magicians like myself. On the bright side, the Green Death has no known members here in the States, but that doesn't mean none have slipped in, or that the Society of Assassins might recruit here, from black magicians interested in being a part of the Green Death...
"If we want to lure them out, we already have the best bait possible - the Captain here. We just need to keep you visible and they should make their next move sooner or later. But if we get a lead that takes us to this Akhim first, obviously we should take it."
On the subject of baseball, Zatara said, "Oh yes, I'm a Yankees fan too! I caught a game last month. They mauled the Philadelphia Athletics that night! It's a shame I can't come to tonight's game."

Hourman comments, " well Zatarra good luck with the show. I do have some tickets. If we find any unusual cases we will stop it. We also should be on the look out for the Spectre again too. if the Society gets him we should try to intervene."

Desmo thanked Zatarra for the tips, and also wished Zatarra luck on the show, and then as they were leaving stopped with an idea to share with the others.
"Hey, fellows," said Desmo. "Say, if I did an interview with a newspaper with my photo - kind of like our unofficial spokesmen - I would be visible to both Green Death and the Society of Assassins. It would lure black magicians, and maybe even draw Akhim out to directly confront me... Anyone know a reporter at one of the big newspapers?"

Hour-Man and Zatara did not, but Zatara said, "Good idea! Even though we have no newspaper contacts for you, you should still reach out to the local papers. I believe there are at least 50 newspapers in Appleton City, so odds are at least one of them will run this story!"

Hourman comments, " well we both did save a department store and stopped a robbery we would have made news." Hourman thinks back and see if there was a reporter at the bombing or at the robbery or if these two events were in the paper. Hourman also says, " if not we could go to the radio station and do an interview there."
