Seeing the disgusting ray/blob lunging at him he cries out for assistance and steps back using his sword cane to defend himself.

The huge lamprey -- which was more like a worm than a ray or blob -- menaced The Cabalist with its hideous, suckered mouth. But The Cabalist was quick with his cane-concealed dagger and stabbed the beast -- seriously injuring it.
The Leading Man charged back into the second room just as the injured lamprey dove back under the surface of the scummy water, leaving a pool of blood mixing with the scum.
The Cabalist had succeeded in moving the floating box closer; it was now just 18" from the edge of the pool, if anyone wished to risk reaching out to grab it now.

Following the Leading Man, Captain Avenger went to check on what happened.

Keeping his wits about him and watching the pool for the worm, the caballist covers the edge side and uses his can to move the box toward him. He says " there is something valuable in the box."

"Alright," The Leading Man said. He used his pistol to cover the pool and keep an eye out for the lamprey.

CA kept his pistol trained on the box.

"What was that?" Agent Lane asked.
"That was scary!" Andrew exclaimed.
"Easy, kid. Maybe you should stay behind me," Lane said to Andrew.
The Cabalist tried again to hook his "cane" around the box and pull it in the rest of the way. That was when a second huge lamprey reared up to attack him!
But The Leading Man and Captain Avenger both had guns trained on the water and could shoot first. The Captain's bullet struck true and the second, now-seriously injured lamprey, dove back under a growing pool of blood.
The shots had echoed very loudly through the complex.
The box was now retrieved without further incident. The Cabalist pulled the contents out of the crumbling box. They were:
A decorative silver cup, a brown stoppered flask, a blue stoppered flask (both ceramic), a copper armband, a small, warped wooden shield, and a rusty dagger.

"You say these are valuable? Maybe to one o' them archaopteryxes," "Lem" said. "Let's go check out the room with the dead bodies."

The caballist says " yes let's go check out the bodies maybe we should hold onto the vials, the cups. Not sure if this shield and dagger are usable. I can check later to see if these items are enchanted."

The Cabalist took the cup, the flasks, the shield, and the dagger.
"I..." Andrew said. "I don't think I'm ready to be here after all..."
"I thought it was weird we were taking the kid," Agent Lane said, unaware of Andrew's secret that he was now keeping even more secretive. "I'll escort him back to the cars. Looks like the birds have flown the coop here anyway..."
Unsure of that, The Leading Man, The Cabalist, and Captain Avenger continued onward. The next room east was a chamber 50' long, 30' wide, with doors to the north and south, plus a slanted hallway heading southeast in the opposite wall.
The floor here was slate-tile and the walls were fitted stone. The ceiling arched 15' above the floor and was reinforced with rotted wooden crossbeams at the height of 10', that connected to four pillars arranged in a square pattern in the chamber.
The three dead bodies were just outside the square of columns, closest to this door. They were spread out on the floor, in no pattern. They were old corpses, mummified with age, dressed in the rags of clothes from 50, 100, or maybe as much as 150 years ago. Clearly not the original builders of this place, but not the Fifth Columnists the Heroes were looking for either.

Howard asks and suggests " I thought mummification was done by the Egyptians? Let's tread here a little carefully and not disturbing or search the bodies. "
The caballist would have bagged the vials and cup and the dagger if it had a sheathe. He will carry the shield.

((There had been no scabbard for the dagger in the box. The corpses appeared to have been naturally mummified.))

The Leading Man helped check out the bodies. "Lem"'s experience made him unmoved by the dead bodies and he set to searching them for clues and usable battlefield plunder with matter-of-fact efficiency.
