It recently came up how difficult it is to figure out what your Hero's Armor Class is if only consulting Book I for the Hero creation rules, since Armor Class is now not fully explained until Book III. In retrospect, I do wish I had not pushed back so much material to Book III. This will not be a problem in 2nd edition.
I'm leaning towards including nothing about ascending Armor Class in H&H 2nd ed., if I can get away with that and still be OGL-compatible...

I'm pretty sure you would still be OGL compatible-i've read the legalese from the various S&W products and I don't see anything in the OGL document that demands both positive and negative ACs. I'm relatively sure the dual AC stats are a tradition started by Matthew Finch and others in order for maximum Edition compatibility, especially since it was one of the D20/OGL mods that worked just as well with the OSR as the original method and was easier to calculate.. You have never been reluctant to credit H&H as being a modified S&W, so if you have any concerns why not contact Mr Finch for his opinion on the matter of his S&W trademark requirements? I'm sure he would love to hear from you! As for my opinion of Ascending vs Descending AC goes- Ascending-Combat Modifiers + D20 = or > AC Descending-Combat Modifiers + D20+AC = or > 20 Either way works for me.

Actually...I hope to eliminate the middle man for 2nd edition. I'm feeling confident I can emulate the game I want without needing Swords & Wizardry this time.
But it has been way too long since I last talked to Matt Finch.

No reason 'Based on Swords & Wizardry' can't become 'Inspired by Swords & Wizardry' at that...still can't wait to see the final product once you've finished!
