Hour-Man and Hobbes (plus Captain Desmo and Gabby) Thursday May 18, 1940, 8 pm Appleton Dinosaur Museum of Natural History
Captain Desmo was sleeping soundly on a couch in the staff lounge.
Hour-Man gave Hobbes the contact information for the Sandman and Zatara. Hobbes was aware that his long distance call was being connected to Philadelphia.
The Sandman answered right away. He did not need to hear the whole story. "Captain Desmo in trouble? I'll be there by nine."
Zatara's number was local, here in New York City, but he did not answer.
Gabby showed up. He and Hobbes ran around the neighborhood, getting a few things from hardware stores the museum did not have.
By 8, Hour-Man had finished his analysis and...was completely stumped. There was absolutely no trace of toxins in the pie that could have sedated Desmo this long.

"So, Rex," said Gabby with his arms crossed looking at wits ends. "Who was this woman again? And why did she give the Cap poisoned pie? And you said a wolf bit him too?!"
"Come on, mate," said Hobbes. "Rex has explained the story well enough already. She's obviously some crazy jealous black heart who wants to take the city's heroes down a few notches. We best wait for help now. Rex, are you sure the Captain's condition is at least stable?"

Hour-Man was no physician, but Captain Desmo's condition did appear to be stable. The wolf bite, which had not been deep, seemed to have healed nicely and might just leave one more scar on Desmo's scarred body.
((I'm going to pause and give Hour-Man time to respond, plus I need to know if you have any other intentions before the Sandman shows up.))

Hour-man checks the paper to see if Zatarra is performing in town. HE tries to recall the spectre contact information if they had any. If hour-man has Doris West personal number he would have called her as well.
Rex comments, " Desmo is in stable condition but no toxins in his system which must be supernatural. " Hourman checks the paper and sees if Zatarra is performing here.
Occasionally he does check the window to see if the wolf is out there. If zatarra is performing tonight he would like to drive over and see when he is available. If Zatarra is not performing and with the fair and the tests, he waits for Sandman

Zatara was not performing in town that night. Hour-Man did not have contact information for the Spectre. He only had Doris West's and Bart Regan's work number, not their personal numbers. ((I will post more in the morning!))

After the calls, Rex waits while coming up with an idea. Rex says, " gertrude or whomever she is deathly afraid of the wolf and its master. I also was approached at the fair by her telling me that her real name is not Gertrude and she is working for an organization. Apparantly I am the target and Desmo is just caught in the middle. I am going to search her employment to get an address for her and also some clues. Sandman and Hobbs you can join me."
until Sandman shows up, Rex looks at the white pages and see if he can find Gertrude address.

Hour-Man and Hobbes (plus Sandman, Captain Desmo, and Gabby) Thursday May 18, 1940, 9 pm Appleton Dinosaur Museum of Natural History
Hour-Man easily found a phone number listing for Zahm Trailer Sales, but no one answered when he called. It was likely past business hours anyway, so this surprised no one.
Neither was anyone surprised when the Sandman showed up among them in the museum's library. He was the Sandman, after all, and entering a locked museum was surely no difficulty for him.
"Gentlemen, I will need more details on what's gone on," the Sandman said.
After being caught up, the Sandman nodded and said, "There are many strange things in the world, and we have seen more than our share of them this past year. Werewolves? I would no longer rule that out anymore...but there is too much we don't know. We need Zatara. I don't know where he is either, but since we have his phone number, it should not be impossible to get his address. Perhaps there are some clues as to where he is there. Once we have Zatara, he can help us find the Spectre.
"I would also not rule out contacting the Washington, D.C. office. These may be off-hours for Agents Regan and West, but I am sure there is an operator there at all hours, and our agents can be told this is an emergency. Besides, one of them might know where Zatara is.
"It's also possible that clues could be found at this Zahm Trailer Sales, since we know Gertrude appeared to work there."
The Heroes had to choose between waiting to hear from the spies, going to Zatara's place, going to Zahm Trailer Sales, or something else...

Rex suggests, "Gabby call DC to leave a message to Bart and Doris as Desmo is now his employer. Then Hobbs, and Sandman and me will stop at zatarra place and see if he is home. Then in costume search Getrude office. We need to get a mask for you Hobbes and yes it will be a late time but the time is of essence."

Hobbes watches Gabby reach for the phone, and putting aside their differences politely nods to him.
"Keep a good eye on our, mate, Gabby," said Hobbes on the way out.

"Wow, they work for Cap now..." Gabby said, awestruck at Captain Desmo's rapid promotion. He stayed behind to work the phone, after Hour-Man was done with it. Hour-Man had to try several times to find an operator who was willing to accept that this was an emergency and they needed the address of Zarah "Zatara" Zavala.
Hour-Man and Hobbes (plus Sandman, Captain Desmo, and Gabby) Thursday May 18, 1940, 9:30 pm Appleton Greenwich Village
It turned out, Zatara had the penthouse suite in a five-story apartment building in Greenwich Village. The elevator took them right up to his front door, but the door was locked. No one answered to knocking.
The Sandman tried the usual places for a spare key to be hidden - under the doormat, on top of the door jam ledge - and came up empty. He turned to the others and said, "I presume no one has objection to my breaking in at this point..." he said this as he was producing lockpicks from an inside coat pocket.

Hour-man in his costume will stand guard. He makes sure Hobbes has his mask on to conceal his identity. Hourman really does not want to force the door.

Hobbes would need to improvise a mask somehow, if he chooses to do so.

Hobbes fumbled around in pocket for his unused black-checked hand towel and ties it over his nose and mouth "bandana" style.

Hour-Man and Hobbes (plus Sandman) Thursday May 18, 1940, 9:40 pm Appleton Greenwich Village
The Sandman picked the lock ((without even needing to burn a stunt)) and opened the door. A costumed Hour-Man and a barely concealed Hobbes followed him in.
The suites inside were like a hoarder's delight, if that hoarder was obsessed with the occult and the exotic. Bric-a-brac covered every shelf that wasn't occupied by books, and shelves were everywhere. But a single flier exposed on the foyer table gave a significant clue right away.
"A magic show in Poughkeepsie, tonight!" The Sandman said after reading it. "Zatara is just 85 miles away!"

"Hour-man, we just gotta go mate!" exclaimed Hobbes. "I'll do anything for the Cap! Maybe Zatara can help him..."
