Hour-Man and Captain Desmo (and Sandman, Gabby) Friday May 12, 1940 Appleton City, Broolyn Balboa Street Waterfront District
Gabby and Hobbs were...odd around each other. Jealous? Each one thought of himself as Captain Desmo's main sidekick.
Rex Tyler had found three properties for Captain Desmo and Sandman to come inspect with him.
One was a small office warehouse, just 1,480 square feet. It was on .1 acres of land, with 12 parking spaces. It was built in 1892 and renovated in 1931. Price: $1,550 for 6 months.
The next was a medium sized office warehouse, 8,030 square feet. It was on a 1.3 acre lot, with 40 parking spaces. It was built in 1925 and never renovated. It had an open floor plan with lounge/conference/break room, four restrooms, shower room, and a large, curved reception area. Price: $6,250 for 6 months.
The next was a large sized office warehouse, 17,370 square feet. It was on a 1.9 acre lot, with 79 parking spaces. It was built in 1920, but had its roof redone in 1938. This one had central air conditioning. Price: $29,500 for 6 months.
"They each have their own plusses," the Sandman was saying after they had toured all three. "The small one is private, low-key. The medium-sized one has some nice amenities, like the shower room. The large one has central air, that you're going to love in the summer. What are your thoughts? Do we need to look at others?"

Rex looks at each of them and checks location on the map. Also he sees if Desmo jet can be stored here
( note to editor: are these in the city or outskirts. Also looking for a river front location to dock my boat)

"Well..." said Desmo sounding unsure. "But none of these places has water for a boat, and I need a road, lengthy parking lot, or field for a short runway."

All three locations were in the dock district, within walking distance of water. Because they were in the city, though, none of them would do for plane (not jet) storage and definitely did not have space for runways. If that was the priority, the search would have to restart outside the city limits.

"Rex," said Desmo. "Look it... it's real swell of you to think of my plane, but, on second thought, my plane is probably fine where it is now. Now, if we could ever get our hands on a 'copter! I could fly one of those from anywhere. Just need a parking lot or roof top to take off and land it. It would be easy to get to the airport in one as well to get to my plane. I'd shoot for the medium space to fit the 'copter - at least when I get one..."

Rex takes the medium sized location and also will try to rent a dock space from the harbor master. He will also call the local furniture place to get furniture, supplies,

((Gah, how did three days pass on me again? No, so we'll need to squeeze that scene in first. I'll try to get to it today!
((Darren, in the comic books, Hour-Man was a radio enthusiast and built a network of radio contacts, as well as a network of local underaged boys, to help him out and find him plot hooks. Are you abandoning both of those concepts?))

In the last few days:
In Europe, Allied forces continued to fall back in Belgium before the German onslaught. The Netherlands surrendered to Germany. Churchill assumed command in England, promising Britain "blood, toil, tears, and sweat." The Norwegian royal family was evacuated to England.
In Asia, the Chinese scored a major victory against Japan on the Hupeh-Honan frontier. As that war spreads, Great Britain considers evacuating all women and children from Hong Kong.
In the Americas, British and French forces arrived in the Carribbean to secure Dutch colonies from German occupation. Uruguay condemns German aggression, while Argentina pledges neutrality. Colombia's oil pipelines were destroyed by German fifth columnists and, in Canada, Ottawa saw sabotage from fifth columnists too.
In the U.S., a Gallup poll predicts FDR will win reelection against Dewey in November by 4%. In a speech, Secretary of State Hull said U.S. isolationism is futile. In Congress, Representative Bulwinkle from North Carolina proposes loaning money to the Allies. FDR reaches out to Mussolini of Italy, asking him to stay out of the War in Europe.
In Appleton, the Appleton World's Fair of 1940 opened. United Artists is going to be filming a movie at the fair soon, in a castle built just for the movie and the fair. At the Dinosaur Museum of Natural History, Professor Whitney Kent is looking for volunteers to go to the Congo to search of a lost city.

Hourman will go with the historical version and offer to do an interview at a radio show. While setting up the new hideout he will see if there are street urchins or maybe dock workers who could use some extra money by being his lookouts. The future rex will make sure the history does not alter as best as he can.

On the phone as his apartment: "What's that Hobbes?" said Desmo. "Are you sure you don't want to tell me in person? It's kind of hard on the phone.... You're going to the Congo?! Listen, who the dickens is this Professor Kent? A friend of Dr. Grussbacker's?... Well how long will you be gone? Three to six months?!.... A lost city...?! But I need you here! ... Okay okay... A man's gotta find his dream... I know... Well, listen... tell me more about the plan later.... And in the meantime, can you try to be a little nicer to Gabby?" Shortly after putting the phone down, the phone rings again. "Gabby?" exclaimed Desmo. "What is it, pal? You got good news? Speak up, I hear a bus or something.... You said a movie? A lead roll in movie at the fair? Well, golly gee! That's swell Gabby! Maybe a leading role? Well, congratulations! I always knew you was a ladies man... Alright, let's have some champagne later.... And listen Hobbes has good news too! ... Hey, watch it buster! You two have got to try and get along. He's my old friend.... okay, well, anyways. See you at dinner." -------------- A few days later. Desmo packed the last things in his suitcase for Washington - his aviator outfit just in case. His wings were already in Hobbes' car, and he wore sunglasses and a burgundy suit with all his cool "tools" in his pockets (and his gun - just in case). Empty apartment, he thought. Well, the two at least were out busy with their own plans. Hour-man had work on the radio to do, and was doing a bang up job getting their hideout set up. A few days in Washington should be fine to do basic training and get papers signed to join Army Intelligence. All he needed to do was to touch base with some old friends. He still hadn't tracked down his brother Hop Harrigan since he'd been back. He needed to make a call to Sister Maria and call Jack. He'd start with Jack. "Hello, Jack?" said Desmo. "Yes, it's me. Yeah, I'm really going to do it... Thanks! I guess it's good to have an official job - that way no one call pull one over on me. Yeah, don't worry I'm trying to have fun as well." Desmo talks generally without going into specifics about goings on (without mentioning the secret base to protect Jack). Then Jack shares some bad news. "Well, how bad is it?" said Desmo. "Why didn't you tell me you had a heart attack? Two of them!!! .... You're at home now? Look, I'm never too busy to be bothered by family.... Are you sure you want me to go on my trip still....? Okay sure, well you take care, and make the wife looks after you! Bye for now! Talk soon!"

Captain Desmo (Doris West, Bart Regan) Monday May 15, 1940 Washington, D.C.
Captain Desmo was photographed, for the first time that he could remember, with his helmet off. It felt so strange, like he was naked! He was also fingerprinted, underwent a fitness test (which he passed with flying colors), and pyschological tests (the psychiatrist seemed to be writing awful fast when the helmet topic came up...). He even had to sign his real name - Desmond Harrigan*. It was an exhausting, all-day business, but Doris and Bart were treating him to dinner that evening to discuss his application. It was a fancy nightclub; Desmo and Bart were in tuxedos (Desmo borrowing one for the night), with Doris absolutely resplendent in a white shimmering cocktail dress.
"Relax, Cap," Agent Bart Regan said, as wine was served to their table. "You've practically got this job in the bag. Tomorrow morning is going to be one more interview and, if that goes well, you'll be filling out your final paperwork. Of course, two excellent references propelled you through the process pretty quickly..." he added with a wink.
"Not that we're just here to talk shop," Doris said. "We do so little together of a social nature during downtime, we thought we should get to know each other better."
"Who are you getting to know better?" asked a good-looking, red-headed man in a tuxedo. Beside him was a taller, beefier man, practically bursting out of an old, tight tux, with something of a dopey look on his face.
"Are you getting better at intelligence work, Red?" Doris asked. "How did you find me?"
"A soldier never talks, except to give his name, rank, and serial number," the man called Red answered.
"Desmo, this is 'Red' Dugan and 'Whitey' Smith, two associates of mine."
Red shook Desmo's hand, but with an overly firm grip, like he was testing him.
((*I trust this is acceptable for his true name? I don't think we've given him one to this point.))
