Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley Wholesalers 12:16 am
On the ground floor, Captain Desmo realized that he could not reach his boot with his arms duct-taped behind the chair. But he could if he broke the chair....Counting on the noise of the radio drowning it out, he lifted himself up and hurled both himself and the chair towards the floor, hoping to smash the chair. It was a flimsy wooden chair - on the first try it worked! Now it was easy to remove his knife and cut himself free...
On the floor above, Hour-Man raced up to the man rummaging through the footlocker and decked him hard enough to knock him out in one blow! Glancing into the open footlocker, Hour-Man saw a sawed-up shotgun that the man had been moments from arming himself with. There were also magazines, beer bottles, cigarette boxes, a box of ammo, and a small burlap sack.
"I've got incoming!" Hawkgirl yelled from the room behind him. Hour-Man could have said the same thing, for another door opened in his room and a fourth hoodlum appeared!

Captain Desmo races up the stairs to see if he can surprise the thug from behind, and knock him out by hitting him on the head with the handle end of knife.

Captain Desmo and Hour-Man (and Hawkgirl) Wednesday, May 3, 1940 Appleton City Flatiron District Bentley Wholesalers 12:18 am
Captain Desmo came bounding up the back stairs in time to see his ex-guard standing there in the doorway to a room, a pistol leveled on an occupant of the room.
"...down that big knife before you cut yourself, missy..." the gunman was saying, before he noticed Captain Desmo coming up the stairs beneath him. "You!" the gunman shouted, and he swiveled his arm to switch targets.
That was when Hawkgirl threw her machete at the gunman, cutting his arm and distracting him. It was the distraction Captain Desmo needed to close the distance and deliver his own crushing punch that decked the gunman and sent him sprawling to the floor.
"Thanks for the assist," Hawkgirl said, approaching the doorway to retrieve her machete. "He had the drop on me and I was worried there for a minute. But c'mon, Hour-Man may need help!"
A room away, Hour-Man delivered a knock-out blow to the remaining hoodlum with the butt of the shotgun to his chin.
The battle was won!
The 2nd floor consists of the living room (where CD and HG still are, with the blaring radio), the bedroom (where HM is), a bathroom (where the 4th hoodlum emerged from), a storage room, and the stairwell.

"Now it's time to duct tape these crooks, do a quick search, and muscles some answers out of them and try to find out where Akhim is!" said Desmo.

Captain Desmo knew exactly where the duct tape was downstairs and was eager to use it on the same hoodlums who had used it on him not long ago.
The three heroes searched. In the bottom of one of the footlockers was a cashbox holding $919.43.
The upstairs storage room, like the one downstairs, contained no obviously illegal contraband, but there were two big boxes of Benzedrine inhalers, an over-the-counter amphetamine, that held enough to stock multiple pharmacies. Hour-Man was aware there was a black market for Benzedrine.
By now, three of the hoodlums were awake again, having only been stunned for 1-5 minutes. And just as the heroes began to discuss what to do next -- the phone in the living room started ringing.

Hourman says, " when we leave lets drop the Benzedrine inhalers to Walgreens and as many drugstores we can. We can divide up the money, I know I am going to give some of mine to a shelter or a church. " Hourman goes to the phone and picks it up and tries to copy the accent he heard one of the thugs use. He decides to let our avaiator and hawkgirl do the intimidating in interrogating the thugs

"So, you saw how quickly we bazookad you all," said Desmo pacing around the prisoners with his cocky swagger. "So you should be scared. Very scared. Now, we're going to ask some questions, and we expect answers now."
The tactics are for Desmo and Hawkgirl to alternate interrogation. They'll tighten duct tape a little if they don't like an answer or pour warm coffee (nothing scalding) on their heads or grab them by the scruff the shirt to give them a good shaking. No punishment that will do them any real harm, but maybe threaten them a little. Desmo and Hawkgirl will try to find out who was behind the bombing, kidnapping of Marie, and the whereabouts of Akhim.

There was no answer on the phone right away. Then an Asian-sounding voice said, "You were successful? You captured Captain Desmo? Really?" Another long pause. Whoever it was on the line, he really must not have expected this to work. "Try to hold him until morning, when I can get there. If he attempts to escape, take no chances. Shoot him, and keep shooting him until you are sure he is dead."
The speaker then hung up without elaborating further, or answering any questions.
Meanwhile, Captain Desmo went to work on intimidating their prisoners. Although the leader was tight-lipped, the others were cowardly and squealed at the first tightening of their duct tape restraints (no coffee necessary).
"Bentley! He runs the operation. He's not here; he's never here overnight. It was his plan to set off a bomb in the department store, to scare them into usin' us as their only wholesaler. But it was supposed to be a little bomb! That Asian guy, the Akhim you're looking for, he told us he was am expert on bombs, but he messed up and nearly exploded the whole store! It was him who told us to snatch that dame, for insurance in case someone came after us, he said. Then later he changed his story, said he wanted to use her for a prisoner exchange wit' you. Bentley didn't like how this was goin', but we were in it too deep with him by then."
"You should have kept your traps shut, you idiots..." the cool one said.
"I ain't takin' the rap for that bombing! None of us should have to!" one of the cowardly ones said. "I don't know where Akhim is now, but he left with Bentley, and Bentley has a real nice 3-story house at the corner of 6th Avenue and 40th Street."

Hourman relays the conversation with the Asian man. He then says to the captain and hawkgirl, " wanna leave these fools tied, call the police and then head to this nice house and solve this case."

"Sounds like a plan, pal." said Desmo. "Let's have a look at the fancy house this loose lipped thug told us about."

A hot tip was left with the police about what could be found in Bentley Wholesalers, though the money case and the boxes of Benzedrine inhalers were removed first and left in the trunk of Hour-Man's car.
Hobbs and Maria were waiting in the car.
"So glad to see it went well!" Hobbs said from the driver's seat. "I spotted Maria leaving the building, intercepted her, and led her back here to keep her safe. I bloody wish I'd seen more of the action, though!"
"I'm so grateful!" Maria said. "I'm so grateful to all of you!"
"Are we taking her with us to Bentley's house?" Hawkgirl asked from outside the car. "Maybe you should detour first and get her home. I'll fly on ahead and scout out the house."

Hourman says, "good idea hawkgirl , be careful, and thank you for the assistance with this case. Lets make sure Marie is safe and we will meet you buy the bad-guy's lair. Oh and do not enter the lair as it might be booby trapped"

"I hope they didn't lay a finger on you Marie! Let's get you home safe first," said Desmo. "Jack is waiting. You can tell him that those unAmerican good for nothings are heading straight to jail."
