Howard replies " whoh wait a minute I am not trying to pin this on you. I was only try to react to what happened tonight and to get our stories straight with the police. " ( did howard notice the well dressed man slipping past either by sight or sound?) Roscoe wouldn't talk to Howard, but dropped his surly attitude as soon as Detective Larson came in. "Good, now I can get my last three statements at once and go home," Larson said. "I never should have let Al talk me into letting the show go on before we were done. Ladies first." "I didn't know anything about it," Veronica said. "Me and the boss, Mr. Feinstein here, were downstairs going over our act. We heard June scream upstairs and we came running." "But you didn't hear a shot?" "No sir." "Mr. Feinstein, you didn't see anything else or hear anything else?" He had not. "Mr. Ball, June McCroon says she was away from her dressing room at the time it happened because she was supposed to meet you at your dressing room, down the hall here. But you weren't here, so she went looking for you. Where were you?" "In the restroom, with my chimp Billy. I've got him potty-trained, but he'll only use the toilet if I'm in there with him. He was being unusually difficult tonight, so we were in there for awhile. Until we heard June scream." "I'm not going to ask the chimp if he can corroborate your story. Can anyone else confirm you were in the restroom?" "Yeah, Will Allen knocked and wanted to know if the room was occupied and I told him it was." "It's a puzzling case..." Larson said, closing his notebook after scribbling the last of his notes. "Looks like a suicide on the face of it, but if he shot himself, why would he muffle the gunshot? You three can all go -- but don't leave town."

The Leading Man took the agitation of the chimpanzee to try and sidle away and find the victim's dressing room. His main goal right now was to get a look at the victim and at his singing partner. Howard did not notice the well-dressed man who slipped in and out of the shadows. Even the police, who had watched The Leading Man go in to talk to Veronica, got distracted by other matters and did not notice him slip out without speaking to Veronica. The Leading Man made his way to the deceased singer's dressing room and found the door locked. Momentarily frustrated, he went to June McCroon's dressing room nearby. June was there, crying quietly, while putting on a winter coat. She did not look like any of the pictures of Mrs. Henri Deselles. There were lots of photos of her in the room with another man who was also not Henri Deselles. That pretty much sank The Leading Man's theory -- but he did spot a photo on the wall of June and this other man posing with Henri Deselles. "Can I help you?" June asked. (( rolls: 6, 6))

"I came to offer my condolences," The Leading Man said gently. He doffed his hat and held it in both hands in front of him.
"I came tonight especially to hear you and Sid Manly perform. You came highly recommended to me by an old friend, Henri Deselles. But I hear There was a terrible accident this evening, Miss McCroon. Is there anything I can do to help? Perhaps let Henri know for you?"
The Leading Man had stepped into the room and pulled it most of the way shut, hopefully to avoid being caught where he hadn't claimed he wanted to be.

Howard pulls the detective as side and says " I noticed something else detective that there were no powder marks if gun residue from the victim and June hands. If this was a suicide there should be burn marks. Plus if they were happy together why would did commit suicide. A couple of years ago I helped some other costume heroes stop a mob boss. That bit of heroics was good and now with this incident it has inspired me to offer assistance again in this investigation."

Oh, his wife has never been as interested in the theater. She always seems, I don't know... *sniff* distracted when she's here. "Hey...I was going to ask a policeman to escort me home tonight, but ...would you walk me home? You could distract me by telling me more about Henri. Did you know him in France?" (( roll: 9))

It's a queer business..." Detective Larson said. Then he looked funny at Howard because of Howard's broken English. Luckily Veronica was on hand and covered for her boss. "Think nothing of it," she told the detective. "He always talks like that when he gets too excited." "Look, I don't know what help you can be," Larson said. "It's not like you can just wave your wand and produce the killer, can you?" It was a condescending joke, such as one would make who did not believe in magic. (( roll: 7))

Howard jokes back " well if you are not going to impede my inquiry then I will assist in this investigation. If I find the killer or any evidence I will bring this to your attention." Howard then heads to the victim dressing room to see if he can get another look before the police seal it off.

I can tell you about my time with Henri in France and you can catch me up on what he's been up to in the States," The Leading Man answered smoothly. "Why don't I give you some privacy until you are ready and then we can get you home. I can wait for you outside the stage door." The Leading Man excused himself, and, pleased with himself, headed for the exit.

Howard then heads to the victim dressing room to see if he can get another look before the police seal it off. "Wait -- impede your inquiry...?" Detective Larson asked with surprise at such audacity, but Howard was already slipping away and Larson was distracted by another officer coming up to him. Howard slipped away from everyone (including Veronica, who was checking out the beat cop who just walked up to Larson), and tested Sid's dressing room door, but found it had been locked. Al, the theater manager, surely had locked it up for the police already. So Howard made his way around to find Al, who was outside the backstage exit, seeing off June and the well-dressed stranger as they left through the back alley. Howard tried to get Al to loan him the key or unlock the door for him, but Al turned on Howard sharply. "How dare you suggest, Howard, that I would interfere with a police investigation? If they want the door locked, I am leaving it locked." When Howard went back inside, he saw the police were all leaving by the front entrance. The comedians were leaving with them (on their own, not under arrest), and laughing with some of the cops over some joke they must have just told. The night watchman, Chris, had just shown up for the night and was standing by the front door ready to lock it up behind them. Veronica was in her coat and ready to go. Howard caught sight of Roscoe, though, skulking about and looking upset. (( rolls: 5, 3))

The Leading Man excused himself, and, pleased with himself, headed for the exit. They left by the backstage exit together, into the alley behind the building. "June!" A portly, double-chinned man with white hair and a thick mustache sauntered after them into the alley. "I was going to offer to walk you home, but I see you've already found someone to help with that. Do I know this young gentleman?" "Al, this is Liam. Liam, this is Al B. Keith, the theater manager and my boss." "This is a good-looking fellow, June. You're theater people, aren't you, Liam?" "Liam is friends with Henri." "Oh! Well, any friend of Henri's is a friend of mine," Al said, shaking Liam's hand vigorously. "Henri is a generous patron of the arts. I'm actually glad he was not at tonight's show, though, as tragic as this evening turned out to be." They said their good-byes to Al and "Liam" and June returned to walking away together. "Liam" had to make up some largely generic, but still convincing lies about Henri to sate June's curiosity. Then he was able to get June talking again. "I've been to the Deselles' house a few times. No, twice, I guess. They hosted parties and invited everyone over from the theater. It's been awhile, though, probably not since before Howard Feinstein, The Cabalist, joined us. To be honest...I got the feeling that things weren't that good between Henri and Jeanne. They were never that affectionate with each other. And the French are supposed to be an affectionate people, aren't they? "Oh...I suppose Henri did flirt with me a little. I'm used to that. But he knew that I was seeing Sid, even back then, so he respected my boundaries..." she started to tear up again at the mention of Sid. Her sadness seemed genuine, but she could always be a great actress.

Andrew walked over to the newsstand and held out a hand with a couple of quarters in it. "Hey kid, I'm looking for a few fellas who might have been hanging out around here lately, watching the trains." He described the three men from the wanted poster as best he could, using Jack's memory to flesh out the details. "You happen to see any of them around lately?" Andrew watched the boy's face as he described the three men from the wanted posters and noticed the boy only seemed to be half listening. "I haven't seen anybody. You want a paper?" the boy said, unhelpfully. Meanwhile, Rick and the security guard were trailing the suspect -- which led straight to the newsstand. The man in the trench coat muscled in and bought a copy of today's newspaper off the paperboy. Right there next to the man in the trench coat -- that kid from earlier who chased off the bully dragging that girl around. Suspicious, that he was just hanging around here still, several hours later. The man in the trench coat went to a quiet corner, pulled out a pencil, and opened the newspaper to a crossword puzzle. After filling out some of the puzzle, the man returned to the newsstand and started to slip the paper back to the paperboy. That was when the man glanced over and finally saw that he was being watched. He put the folded up newspaper inside his coat instead and started to walk fast for the front exit. (( roll: 5, 2, 1)) Murphy quickly picked up the pace, hoping to outpace the man in the trench coat.

Howard approaches Roscoe and says " wow what an evening. A good show and then this incident with Sid. You okay Roscoe?" Howard does give Veronica the " I will be with you in a minute look" Veronica shrugged it off and went outside, trusting Howard would catch up with her. Roscoe also shrugged, in his own way. "Oh, sure, Howard. Sorry about earlier. You know...what happened has us all shook up, you know? So who was that guy June left with? I've never seen him around here before. Can you believe the nerve of him, just waltzing in here and getting too escort June home after what happened? Do you suppose she's safe with him? What if he was the killer?"
