We picked up where we left off three weeks earlier, with Sandman, Hourman, Hawkman, Green Lantern, and the Atom still searching through Mr. X's museum-like hideout. The next room was a complicated magical trap with a lot of elements to it that kept everyone guessing for awhile, but Hourman cut his way through the magical webbing, freed Hawkman, and got him out in time just before the room filled with fire. Or did it?
Moving on, the Heroes found a bedroom guarded by two hoodlums. Sandman and Hawkman shot and killed one of them, while the other escaped up, and down some stairs, only to be finally caught by the Atom. The hoodlum squealed, thinking he was surrounded by a group of Superman's, but only knew that he was guarding the bedchamber of Mr. X's lieutenant, Boris, and Boris' faithful magic-user companion, Theodore, who were out patrolling the hideout and were overdue to return. Learning Boris' route, the JSA planned to intercept him. Meanwhile, Hawkman explored the bedroom and tried to open an old chest, only to get stuck by a poison pin trap in the lock. Luckily, Green Lantern was nearby and was carrying anti-venom, which worked. For his troubles, Hawkman laid claim to a jeweled helmet and scabbard in the room that he wanted as trophies.
Covering old terrain, the JSA moved past the sealed room again and decided to chance it this time. After unsealing it and opening the door, Hawkman was attacked by what appeared to be a giant, living blob of snot and pus. When Hourman tried to kick it, he learned how acidic it was. The others drew guns and blasted it to bits, but found the room behind it empty.
Moving on, the JSA moved to the stairs that supposedly led up to a warehouse. The way up was blocked, however, by something on top of the secret door, and the Heroes decided to delay dealing with that.
Moving through the barracks, the JSA found 5 yellow peril hoodlums and Sandman, Hawkman, and the Atom took them all down. Some of the hoodlums had tried to flee into a large north-south corridor to the east and, when Sandman checked the corridor, he spotted six thugs guarding a door to the north. Sandman was a little quicker on the trigger than these thugs with their shotguns and he gassed most of them. The remaining thugs did not last long against the Heroes. When backup came from the south in the form of two 8' tall ogres, both of them fell quickly to being gassed.
The Atom asked Green Lantern to make him invisible again so he could go scouting around the corner to the south, while Sandman, Hourman, and Hawkman checked the north door. The Atom spotted six more hoodlums hiding around the corner, waiting to ambush the Heroes. That ambush party didn't last long against Green Lantern willing them to sleep and the Atom's shotgun. The remaining hoodlum surrendered. But that wasn't the main battle.
Behind the north door was a smaller throne room, where sat Boris, flanked by Theodore, and scattered through the room were 10 hideous, demonic monsters. The main bad guys dodged Sandman's initial gas attack, Hourman was dropped by Theodore's sleep spell, but then Theodore went down from a second gas shell launched from the Sandman's gun. Boris, however, had scooped up a shield and a submachine gun and was letting them have it. Sandman, already moderately injured, had to step out of the line of fire and dragged Hourman out to wake him up. Hawkman and Boris didn't have line of sight of each other as they traded bullets for long, for the demons were soon lined up in front of Hawkman.
But that's when Green Lantern stepped up and unleashed a fireball in the room. The demons were all dropped by the fireball. Boris was still on his feet, but in bad shape. One more bullet rendered him unconscious.
The Atom and Green Lantern were fine, but the other three heroes were pretty badly hurt and could use hospitalization. It was decided to deliver first aid to Boris and Theodore so they would not have to rest here long before Boris was awake for questioning. Boris revealed that he and Theodore were partners "from the old country", but that it was Boris who answered to Mr. X. Not that he had ever seen Mr. X -- Mr. X called him every day at 5 o'clock from a nearby public phonebooth on the surface. That was another hour away.
Green Lantern questioned Theodore and learned of a secret cache of magic scrolls, that they all found.
The FBI had long since taken control of the Chinese restaurant that served to conceal the entrance to the hideout on the surface. The JSA began piling up prisoners at the top of the stairs for the FBI to cart away, but also told them about the call and wanted a wiretap. It was tough to arrange in time, but the FBI managed it. And it was decided that Hourman did the best Boris impression, so he made the call. Mr. X, in a sophisticated voice, asked "Boris" to quadruple check his magic treasures. The JSA was coming down hard on him and he wanted to send 40 more men to reinforce the hideout in 2 days.
The wiretap worked and both the FBI and the JSA knew where Mr. X, allegedly, could be found. The JSA asked the FBI to wait and let them handle it -- but first they spent a day in the hospital resting up, while Green Lantern learned what was on all the scrolls they found. Hourman, as Boris, exchanged one more phone call with Mr. X and learned that 30 of those reinforcements were coming in trucks before dawn, and to load up the (already defeated) troll into one of the trucks, as Mr. X wanted it in a trap for the Spectre.
Reminded that they could summon the Spectre with the magic ring he had given them, the Spectre appeared and they brought each other up to speed. The Spectre and Dr. Fate (and should have also been the Flash, though I forgot to mention him) had been busy smashing Mr. X's rings elsewhere, leaving Mr. X feeling threatened and desperate. However, the Spectre was more interested in the supernatural "exhibits" in the hideout and wanted to deal with those with Dr. Fate, while the other heroes handled Mr. X.
Mr. X's address was an ordinary looking middle class tenement building in Manhattan. Hourman spotted a lookout on a rooftop, who was dealt with by Hawkman and questioned by the Atom. In an effort to flush out Mr. X, the Atom pretended to be the lookout on the lookout's walkie-talkie, alerting the owner of its mate that the Atom was in the vicinity. A small little man in a blue suit and bowler hat emerged from the building and left. Everyone wanted to follow this man -- BUT, he was so supernaturally inconspicuous that they all forgot about him after seeing him.
Mr. X might have gotten away (the players were right -- that was the guy!), but the Atom's walkie-talkie kept squealching feedback, suggesting that the other walkie-talkie was still nearby. Using that, the Atom was able to track Mr. X to a police station -- where Mr. X was formally surrendering, rather than face a beating from the Justice Society of America.
