This is culled and expanded from the "Create Your Own Campaign Setting" thread. Independence is an alternate history where post-colonial America is the last stand for the human race against alien slavers.
>I got a 3, or 3,000. Finding the nearest place with a pop. of 3,000+....That makes it a 1830 Lexington, KY campaign. Ooo, a free the slaves campaign?
>
>I got yes and 5, so something changed in the world 300,000 years ago that let magic into the world.
>
>I got yes, superheroes first started appearing 4 years ago. In 1826? That's going to take some creativity to explain.
>
>I got yes for aliens, yes for androids - androids in 1830!, yes for half-humans, but a big fat no for mermen. I think the arrival of aliens on Earth in 1826 brought androids to Earth, and also inspired the rise of superheroes ->- costumed vigilantes using captured alien science to fight the aliens, because the aliens are slavers taking black men, white men, and women alike!
>
>I get a 19th level fighter, a 17th level magic-user, a 16th level mysteryman, and a 17th level superhero. Dang, this setting can support some high-level play!
>
>The fighter is neutral, the magic-user is a good guy, the mysteryman is a good guy, and the superhero is neutral. The mobsters & aliens are going to have to be really strong to balance this setting out. I think, in this >setting, the superhero is an alien who is training the resistance, and inspires them by example, but doesn't want to directly interfere against his own race. The magic-users have been secretly waiting and preparing for the >alien invasion for 300,000 years, training the mysterymen to be their agents in the world. The fighter is the Eternal Champion, watching the conflict unfold before deciding which side to tip the scale.
The aliens -- oh boy -- they are on a planet 72% the size of Earth, mobile, and heading towards Earth’s solar system, where it’s presence will surely destroy the orbit of every world it passes. The aliens are magic-users -- so their whole world is being moved by magic? A whole bunch of Wish spells? They’re half-man/beast-men magic-users. Or rather, that is the master race on the world, and their slave races are half-aliens of the Star Trek variety along with lower caste beast-men (the herbivore species, ala Zootopia?). The ruling beast-men want humans from Earth because…ew, all the beast-men are sterile and they need fresh breeding stock! They are doing chemical experimentation on humans to alter them into the right genetic material. Then they will leave the half-aliens on this world and take the altered humans to their next breeding planet as their slave race. Luckily, humanity has…FIGHTING SPIRIT! And a technique that most humans can do, but the master race are defenseless against (whistle? Vulnerable to shrill sounds because of their ultra-keen hearing? Or the fact that all human faces look alike to them?).
Elaborating a little more…the original Good magic-users came from a world conquered by the Beast-Men (we’ll need a better name for them) 300,000 years ago, on the other side of our galaxy. The Beast Men are near immortal, so they can make the journey between worlds at sub-light speeds in just a few generations. The Good magic-users have tried to save every planet in the Beast-Men’s path to varying success, but never a complete victory. On Earth, they have been entrenched the longest, teaching magic to mankind (but not all of mankind, they know they can’t trust everyone with that kind of power).
The half-aliens are 2 HD and many of them have been altered to have superpowers. The first superheroes to appear in 1826 were “traitorous” half-aliens and sub-caste Beast-Men looking to turn the tables finally on their masters. The sub-caste Beast Men range from 2-6 HD depending on what animal type they resemble, while the carnivorous Beast Men are 6-9 HD. The slaves are not allowed to have advanced technology, but the master race has late 21st century-equivalent tech, including androids.
This campaign has only four characters based on published characters: a fighter from Timely,75% like Captain America (but he’s only 4th level!); a superhero from Fox, 60% like Blue Beetle (but much more powerful, 11th level!); a non-classed character from MLJ, 50% like Doc Strong (the equivalent of a 2nd level scientist in 1st ed); and a superhero from Quality, an android 55% like Bozo the Robot (also 11th level, so maybe more like a smiling Terminator!).
Some plot lines:
-"Captain America" recruits novice Heroes for some daring raids against half-aliens transporting slaves cross-country.
-Magic-users in the past left hidden superweapons/magic artifacts to use against the aliens and the heroes go on a quest to find them.
-"Doc Strong" has recovered some alien tech and needs someone to protect his hideout long enough for him to study it (tower defense game).
-Lexington Kentucky is a last stop on the "underground railroad" moving people into the Ohio River Valley to hide. The heroes need to shuttle people into the forest without being discovered.
