Starting this in preparation for a play by post campaign I hope to start in about another week or so.
The premise: Players are applicants to the Pantheon of Super Heroes in the 30th Century. It is early in the group's career, but they've been around long enough to build a reputation and establish themselves as a potent force for Good in a galaxy all too infested with Evil. The Pantheon is an homage to the Legion of Super-Heroes. This game assumes a very early Silver Age time frame, actually during the transition from Golden to Silver Ages during the late '50's and early '60's. The tone is serious but whimsical with occasional goofy moments. Parallels the Legion stories before Shooter began writing.
Players can assume roles of some of the Pantheon members (some are reserved for NPC status) at the starts of their careers, or new characters whose membership and adventures are not recorded in the canon issues.
To deal with any continuity alterations that might occur, this campaign does not take place on either Earth A or Earth B, but on another, more distant parallel world. Let's call it "Earth K". It's history almost perfectly parallels that of Earth A, perhaps with the occasional quirk or minor alteration. Events involving the Pantheon shown in the comics are not necessarily going to occur in this timeline.
Since the Origin of the Pantheon has not, to my knowledge, been recorded anywhere, I have made up an origin story and some previous events to give the campaign some degree of historical depth.
Origin: Clone Boy, Gravity Girl, and Laughing Boy--in their civilian guises--were traveling on a venerable passenger rocket named "The Tomorrow" when the ship was attacked by Thaxxas the barbarian space pirate and his crew of interstellar beast-men. (picture a cross between a classic hairy caveman, a viking, and a ray gun toting space pirate--with red skin, black hair, and an ugly snarling face). The trio of future heroes leaped into action to resist the boarding party and to get passengers to safety. They fought a losing battle, struggling valiantly, but were outnumbered and outgunned. All would have been lost had not Jupiter Boy been passing by in his private space cruiser. A Cathode Giant of living electricity, Jupiter Boy took on human form to leave his home world and discover the wonders of Humanity. His intervention turned the tide of the battle and Thaxxas was defeated. The heroes vowed to remain friends, stay in contact, and--HEY!--maybe even start some kind of superhero club, or something.
All in a tale entitled: ATTACK ON TOMORROW
During their first few adventures together, the Pantheon--as they decided to call themselves, after a half-joking suggestion by Laughing Boy--did not have a regular headquarters. They met at the futuristic equivalent of a malt shop, frequented by many civilian teens, both human and alien. They mostly battled small crimes. Bandits, thieves, dangerously mad scientists were their main opponents. And they assisted in frontier space exploration, meeting grotesque space monsters and weird aliens almost everywhere they went.
The team started to grow, adding Brain Boy and Telegirl as early members.
They gained their headquarters when they learned that the badly damaged and ill-omened SS (space ship) Tomorrow was going to be decommissioned and junked. The ship had sentimental attachments for the teens, so they convinced the company to donate it to them as a new headquarters. Working hard, the teens refurbished and repaired the old passenger liner, turning it into a sparkling, if somewhat retro-styled, orbital base.
During this period, they encountered a strange phenomenon. The ghostly figure of a girl appeared on the ship, slipping quietly through the walls, fleeing from any attempt to contact her or determine what she wanted. When a vengeful bandit that they had captured previously, Mokk Zaalor, sneaked aboard the ship with the intention of planting a bomb and ending the team, the ghostly figure Spooked him, frightening him so badly that he fled in terror, right into the arms of Jupiter Boy. Mokk went back to the prison planetoid, and Ghost Girl shyly made her acquaintance with the team--who welcomed her, encouraging her to join as Ghost Girl.
This classic tale was entitled TOMORROW IS HAUNTED!
Brain Boy invented the Time Pills that the team would use during their early years and the first thing they did with the new technology was go back in time to visit Ultragirl--who's legendary career served as the inspiration and model for all the teens' efforts. Jupiter Boy secretly fell in love with her (a fact known only by Telegirl), and Ultragirl "thought he was cute", maybe worth making friends with. The team made Ultragirl an honorary member and invited her to visit the future when she was able. Brain Boy gave her a single precious Time Pill an instructions on how to reach them. This began Ultragirl's infrequent guest appearances with the team. By the time of the campaign, she has moved from "honorary" member to a full-fledged member of the team.
Tragedy befell the team when Brain Boy's efforts to create a robotic butler for them backfired and unleashed the menace of Malfatron. Originally Brain Boy gave his creation a self-repair system that would handle all maintenance and repair problems for it. "Albert" however soon turned on them, using its repair and regeneration systems to absorb a mound of junk and spare parts until it became a towering, ramshackle mountain of homicidal robotic rage. Dubbed "Malfatron"--the Malfunctioning Cybertron, the comical looking creation soon proved itself to be deadly dangerous, taking over the entire ship and imprisoning the team members one by one. It redubbed itself the "Malevolent Functioning Autonomous Cybertron", it planned to conquer the whole world. Its plans were interrupted when Ultragirl appeared for one of her visits, right in the middle of the crisis. Malfatron was ready for her, however, and had prepared a ray that would counter the radiation that gives Ultragirl her power. One dose and she would be nothing but a vulnerable teenage girl. When it raised its lethal laser cannon to incinerate the now helpless Christie Kelly, Clone Boy threw himself between her and the beam. He was burned to a crisp. The sight enraged Jupiter Boy so much that he reverted to his true form as a Cathode Giant, the first time his teammates had ever seen his actual appearance. A titanic struggle of giants raged through the ship. Brain Boy was freed when his containment cube shattered, allowing him to implant a computer virus in his creation which shut it down. "What I thought was an unsolvable hardware problem was nothing more than a software design flaw!"
The sorrowful team buried what was left of Clone Boy on Glory, the Cemetary World for the galaxy's heroes. A life-sized gold statue of Clone Boy was made and became the first statue installed in the Pantheon's Hall of Heroes memorial.
Everyone was stunned when they returned to the ship to find Clone Boy sprawled on a couch watching tri-vids. "Where'd everybody go?" The Clone Boy who died was a duplicate that Dubba had formed. The neural backlash from his clone's demise knocked the original Clone Boy unconscious, until he awoke alone on the ship with a pile of blackened wreckage that was all that was left of Malfatron's robotic body. (His datacore was encased in a crystal sphere and locked away in the securest of the Tomorrow's containment vaults.
The founders are currently 4th level, with Brain Boy, Ghost Girl, and Telegirl at 3rd level.
PC's can start at 2nd Level to allow the Superheroes the chance to use their power. But first level is also acceptable, if someone wants the thrill of being the fragile newcomer.
1st level hp are at maximum.
Attributes can be generated one of two ways: roll 4D6 take the highest 3, assign as desired. or, you can go the "I know I might wind up in the Pantheon of Demi-Heroes instead" option of 3D6 in order.
