By 4:30 ((day 2 of downtime)), John was en route to the office of the newspaper that printed the article about the fire at Sak's (Los Angeles Times? Los Angeles Examiner?). He was going to walk through the office, looking for the reporter who covered the story.
If the reporter was not there, John looked for a chance to glance at anything on his desk that might give a clue as to what story the reporter was working on now.
If someone stopped him, John pretended to have an appointment with a story editor, would be vague about which one, and would say he forgot something in his car if pinned down.
If the reporter was there, John would introduce himself, with his real name and credentials as a criminology professor. "I thought we should talk, in case you planned to do any follow-up reporting on the fire at Sak's," John would add. "You might find my perspective on the matter useful. May we go somewhere...?"

(save vs plot) John is lucky and he sees the reporter on his way from his desk to the front door. They meet in the middle of the office. The reporter, James duffy, "nice to meet you I did cover the fire. I am on my way to Chutes Park to interview the manager with the Angels. I can talk to you tomorrow say lunchtime at Freddies diner, say 1 pm?"

John agreed to the meeting.
((Day 3 of downtime))
John had a morning class that let out at 11 am. This was the day he had been waiting to bring up the Sak's fire in class. First, he went over some general questions about their projects, based on what students had asked him privately about. That went on for an hour before he could move to a new topic.
At first, he got blank stares when he talked about the federal agents reported at the department store.
"What crimes do G-Men investigate?" he asked the class.
More hands went up. As right answers emerged, the class began to understand how unusual the situation was. "Obviously there is not enough data to reach sound conclusions, but what possibilities can we infer here?"
"It wasn't just a robbery," was the first obvious (and correct) answer.
"Professor," Rose said, "wasn't there a bomb threat on the radio just earlier that same day, naming Sak's as the intended target? So why would a respectable journalist pretend it was an aborted robbery?"
"Why indeed. I intend to ask him and find out."
More useful discussion ensued before class ended. Afterwards, Rose approached John.
"What can I do for you today, Miss Wayne?" he asked, putting some professional detachment between them.
"I'm coming with you."
"You're what?"
"When you speak to James Duffy."
"Miss Wayne..."
"I'm changing my class project to being about uncovering the identity of Los Angeles' mysterymen. I need to be a part of your interview for research purposes."
"I see." John was defeated; he couldn't turn down a request linked to a class project. Two showed up for lunch with James Duffy at Freddies.

"Thank you for agreeing to meet with me," John said to James at the lunch table. "This is my star pupil, Rose Wayne..."
John led with small talk, including subtly flattering things about journalism and the integrity of the press. If pressed to business, John oversold slightly his knowledge of FBI matters (it was really no more than anyone who read the annual reports from the Criminal Justice Information Services Division of the FBI would know).
He was more interested in gaining James' confidence and befriending him. And if that wasn't working...there was always Rose there. If James did not warm to John, perhaps he would warm to an attractive young lady.
((Requesting two encounter reaction checks, one for John and one for Rose. If John gets a friendly or better reaction, I would like a supporting cast recruitment check.))

"Army Intelligence? Interesting. Well at least that confirms that they know that the Germans are involved in this." Charlie said after swallowing some coffee. Right now the Legion Hall was nearly empty. Sam, a Spanish-American War vet was the only other guy in the bar right now. He was reading a newspaper and nursing a beer at the other end of the bar.
"Say, don't you know someone in the S2 down at Camp Ayres in Chino? I might want to give him a call."

( making a save vs plot): Sam thinks for a second and pours another coffee and comments, " yeah a Sergeant Helms. He is one of the shift leaders of the prison. Let me make a call" Sam picks up the phone and after a few phone calls and transfers he says, "manny it is Sam Donald hows it going. Hey a good friend of mine may need your help. He is a former vet like us and I was wondering if I can send you down to meet him. " There is a pause and Sam talks," ok so tomorrow then at lunch time, 1300. All right I will let him know." Sam comes back and says, " so here is the address and you will need to sign in with security. Manny will meet you and also give you some information. Manny and I go way back." www.militarymuseum.org/ChinoPOWCamp.html/ Unless charlie has other tasks for the first day i will skip to day two The

Day 2:
Charlie makes his way to the military POW camp to meet with Sergeant Helms.
At lunch James, smiles and greets the professor and Rose. He comments, " it is nice to have someone with your expertise lending a hand. I know the police were called in due to a fire and a break in. When i asked the lead detective, Mike Swan, about the mad bomber, Mike told me the police were investigating and will give a statement. The police did say that the thieves complained about masked individuals capturing them, but the police say they arrived in the nick of time to stop them. One odd thing though is that I notice a man who introduced himself as Army intelligence, Special projects division. Not sure who he is or why he was there. I saw one of my competitive journalists, Betty Lang, try to interview the man working for the Army intelligence and the man told Betty no comment and if she presses further she will be under arrest. For a break in and accidental fire why the government is here. " The meal comes and Rose listens intensively. Apparently James is focussing on the professor instead of Rose. At the end of lunch James asks, " hey professor if find any information or if I find anything we should chat further. I am new in the industry just graduated so I don't have a lot of sources. can I count on you?"
( reaction roll for the professor higher the rose, provided the professor agrees to be a source for James, the SC member added to the professor)

Day 3:
"Why, of course, James," John said with a smile. "While you're getting your bearings in the industry, it might be a good idea for you to share any crime stories you get leads on, so I can offer my expertise. It will be a pleasure working with you."
((I'll add him to my SCM list now!))

james accepts the handshake and will be sharing stories and asking the professor for expertise.
Arrowhead arrives at the camp. He signs in with security and is told where to park. He is then lead by escort to a building. As he passes the courtyard he sees military drills going on. All of these men are Army. Why they are not overseas is still a mystery. The guards open the door and Charlie is lead inside. He is lead to the galley(cafeteria) and within a couple of minutes a man dressed in the uniform of the day appears. "Charlie my name is Sgt Helms nice to meet you. The kitchen is clearing up lunch we do have some leftovers and coffee if you have not eaten yet. So you a friend of Sam . Sam and i briefly served together and have been friends ever since. I heard you had some questions. "
(OOC besides questions let me know if Charlie is trying to recruit Sam as a SCM)

Day 3:
"What's that look for?" John asked Rose as they were leaving and heading to his car. Rose was giving him angry glares and the silent treatment.
Once they were in the car, Rose finally spoke. "I feel used, Professor Raymond. You didn't bring me along so I could interview a source. You brought me along as...as..."
"A distraction, while I pumped him for information?" John said as he drove away. "I will not insult your intelligence by claiming otherwise. However, this was still a learning opportunity for you. You learned that you can't wait for the perfect opening during a group interview; you jump in and ask your questions as soon as you can."
"Hmph. And was it worth it? We didn't learn much."
"No, and we even picked up a new question. Why put a rookie reporter on such a big story? Did the editor really misjudge this story, or was James chosen because he might miss more than a pro?"
"Then what do we do next?"
"Now for some homework. We need to find out more about Detective Swan."

"Nice to meet you sergeant. My name's Charlie. Charlie Ironhead. I was in the Marines. Served in China for a bit," Charlie shook the NCOs hand and took the offered seat.
"I'll cut to the chase. I was downtown the other night and I saw what happened at Sak's. I'm curious as to why Military Intelligence was on the scene. Jimmy told me he had heard that through the grapevine."

As the web and rose leave the restaurant are they going to Beverly Hills to the police station then?
Sergeant Helms says, "you can call me Manny. We were contacted about the incident at Sak's. In fact we have a prisoner in questioning right now. Apparently these thieves we believe were in fact Kraut spies sent to cause mayhem and to instill fear. This facility is strictly need to know and this complex is not reported to the newspaper. We also made sure not to tell the reporters any information until we confirm this threat is over with. Got to keep the positive war news to the people. " both of you make small talk
(OOC any other questions and with the roll I just made, Arrowhead can add Sergeant helms to his SCM)

As the web and rose leave the restaurant are they going to Beverly Hills to the police station then? ((You don't do research at a police station -- you go to a library! We're going to the Los Angeles Public Library. First we'll read old newspaper articles reporting crimes looking for Detective Swan -- see what kinds of cases he normally works on, see if he's ever done anything controversial, see if he's ever worked with the FBI or military intelligence before. We may have one rest turn to search, so we can continue again on day 4, before rendezvousing with the others.))
