The Heroes assembled at the plane -- now the only place where the Heroes felt they could safely gather -- and discussed what they should do next as a group.
White Knight was heavily in favor of going to the Tavern in the Southlands and taking on the mobsters there. Dark Lash warned against it, though, aware of how many mobsters there were there. The others wanted a simpler task as well.
Everyone was aware, either from talking to locals or reading it in The Prospector, that Bruno Fischer had died after three weeks in a coma. This had everyone intrigued, so it became their first group priority. They went to see his widow, Mattie, and managed to get her to see the bleakness of her situation after fending off her meager attempt to take on the whole team (and aided, perhaps, by White Knight’s cruel taunting of her).
While White Knight and Blaze took her into town to see her husband’s remains at Dr. Koester’s office, the others searched the farm. They found evidence exposing why mobsters kept coming to the Fischer Farm since the Fog Wall went up – Mattie had been pimping out her niece and turning this place into a brothel. They found a secret stash of money – the Fischer’s ill-gotten gains – but instead of keeping it, turned it over as evidence. The police came and, this time, agreed they would finally take Mattie into custody. Chief Wittenberg, reluctantly, agreed to ignore the Heroes squatting at the Fischer Farm.
Meanwhile, Dr. Koester revealed that she simply did not have the equipment necessary to keep a man in a coma alive any longer, and still had no explanation for what had caused his coma. She agreed to do an autopsy for free, out of guilt over Bruno’s death.
But the Heroes did not stick around for that. They reunited and had a serious discussion about going into the Southlands at night – something they had not tried yet. While some were interested – White Knight was chomping at the bit to dig around oak trees in the Southlands – there was general concern about safety, and just how cold it got at night. It was decided to wait until morning, with everyone enjoying their first pleasant night at their new base of operations.

In the morning, the five Heroes headed into the Southlands and stopped to see the gnomes at the Ruins. A fifth gnome had joined them. The gnomes were arguing about if the giant mechanism under the ruins was an underground clock or a giant walking automaton. White Knight wanted to dig out the mechanism, but the gnomes assured him it was enormous and they could access it easily enough from the inside. They could get more done if they had their own tools. And more beer and sandwiches.
The Heroes examined the ruins and Dark Lash found evidence that some heavy machinery was once secured in at least one of the buildings, but it was all removed before the buildings were smashed.
The Heroes vowed to recover the tools from the House, after the gnomes told them what room they had left them in.
But first, they stopped at the Graveyard. Everyone was sure there was some secret to the graveyard that still eluded them. First, they confirmed that Pierce, the stockbroker, could not be buried in the graveyard because the headstones only went as recent as 1902. There was an old oak tree in the graveyard, but they rejected the idea of going back to town for shovels.
Next, they went to the House. Again, they went straight through the garage, ignoring the rest of the house. They took the stairs under the trap door, found the hallway heading east and – were attacked! Three hoodlums had set up an ambush with cover and automatic rifles. But they were no match for Batman’s sleep spell.
They hid the three gunmen, stashed in one of the side rooms to the north, then headed for the room opposite the lounge where the gnome tools were supposed to be. Except – there was a corridor instead of a room there. In fact, the corridor turned out to be part of a maze that took them a long time to explore. It was a trapped maze too, as Blaze was injured by a spear trap behind one door. They did find eight more mobsters either patrolling or guarding the maze. They beat up for the first four, then bluffed their way out of the encounter with the second four (Blaze and Batman were both badly injured by now).
The mobsters didn’t know about any gnome tools, but they assumed The Spook had taken them. The Spook routinely robbed from these Chicago mobsters, and was believed to have one or two assistants working with him.
The Heroes circled back around to the lounge, checked it, and found new things were in the lounge this time, including the gnome tools. The Heroes left victorious!
