Session 2
January 8, 1942
The Heroes had been spending a lot of time keeping a low profile the previous week, but today Batman, Dark Lash, and Blaze were enjoying a rare public meal at Kruse’s Tavern -- and a chance to get away from The White Knight and Gracie, who were both sick with bad colds. Although the villagers had initially assumed Batman was someone dressed for a New Year’s Eve costume party, now it was just weird and people were uncomfortable around him. But before they could finish eating their meals were interrupted by a call to arms -- the Mount Prospect State Bank was being robbed!
Blaze got there first on his scooter and allowed himself to be captured so he could keep an eye on the four robbers inside. When Dark Lash and Batman arrived, they attacked and captured all four robbers easily.
They held the prisoners until Police Chief Wittenberg arrived to claim them. The Chief was impressed with them and wanted their help moving the prisoners to the jail, and then wanted them to stick around for a chat.
George Wittenberg first dismissed Adolph Kruse’s accusations against Dark Lash; he had larger problems. His tiny police force was swamped with the increasingly overwhelming task of just keeping the villagers calm and had little time for any real police work. Although they patrolled at night, they were getting reports of people sneaking through town at night and kept failing to catch them. Recent reports indicated that two groups of strangers had been seen in town -- one was the Heroes, but another group frequented Gunnell’s Restaurant on the north side of town.
They decided to investigate Gunnells’ at once. Dark Lash went in separately and tried to ingratiate herself in with the strangers there. Blaze went to join two strangers who went to use the adjoining bowling alley. And Batman tried to head straight through the back rooms to follow the proprietor, Jack Gunnell.
Batman guessed that Jack had taken the stairs up from the kitchen and rushed past a bouncer to get up there. But the bouncer was tough and Batman had to slip out a window to avoid a prolonged fight with him. Unfortunately, there was snow on the roof and Batman slipped and fell, getting knocked out when he hit the ground outside.
Blaze found he had a knack for bowling, but not such a good knack for finding out information.
Dark Lash, however, was actually too successful. The leader of the strangers, a hoodlum named Nick, took an immediate liking to her and insisted she come with them. They drove out of town, through the farmland south of Mount Prospect, as close as the roads took them towards the Fog Wall. From there, they took her on foot into the strange hills the Heroes had explored a week ago to the abandoned tavern. Except that it was no longer abandoned -- the hoodlums had taken it over.
Nick explained how he and the others had woke up in Mount Prospect with no recollection of how they got there, similar to the Heroes, except that they had heard a voice in their heads telling them to head south into this area. Their residency in the tavern was just temporary, as they were negotiating with a “landlord down south” for another home.
Meanwhile, Blaze tried to explore the restaurant. While the bouncer was busy outside, looking for Batman, Blaze knocked out the cook in the kitchen and checked downstairs. At the back of the wine cellar, he found a door leading into a secret gym. He also found a secret niche in the wine cellar where Jack Gunnell’s diary was concealed. But before Blaze could leave with it, he was confronted by Jack and the bouncer and was captured.
Later, Batman woke up, tied to a chair in the cellar. He broke the chair to get free, then carried Blaze out. First aid wasn’t helping Blaze, so Batman carried Blaze back to their airplane hideout.
Meanwhile, Dark Lash sneaked away from Nick and his gang to go back to Gunnells’, correctly assuming the others were in danger. She stole one of their cars and led the mobsters on a merry chase back up north to Gunells’, only to find that the others had already been captured and escaped. Short on options, Dark Lash led Nick’s mob to the plane for a showdown.
With a still-sick White Knight’s help, four of the Heroes were able to capture Nick, though his gang was allowed to flee.
