rex raises his hand and volunteers. He comments, " I have a compass and a backpack in my car, although a map would be excellent. Maybe the base or the library can give us access."
(OOC question with my towing boat is this small, large and could I keep this in my car. Also are we near a river as the boat could be useful?)

((Rex's towboat is 100' long, far too large to fit in his car.
((Piney Creek runs nearby the airworks factory, but does not cross onto the property. Rivers are much further away.))
"That's two volunteers," Doris said.
"I have a hunch Shiera will join us," Bart interjected.
"Perhaps three, then," Doris responded. "We voted on three and a half days to prep for going back in and you have one and a half days left. I hope you find your entrance..."
((Bart is willing to discuss the map question with Rex. The USGS will not have really detailed topographical maps made until 1947, so the local libraries are unlikely to have anything unless a commercially made map was commissioned.))
"It is likely that the AAW had a detailed survey made of the grounds before they started construction..." Bart said later to Rex, "but here's the thing -- if your suspicions are right and there's an inside man in the factory working with the cultists, requesting to see the survey maps might tip our hand to what we're doing. But I'll let it be your call. Do you think it's worth the risk?"

Rex says, " you are probably right. Let's instead take a nature walk and find the entrance ourselves. Let's make sure we have our boots, some extra rope, and an extra compass plus some binoculars. Also for Doris we should bring a camera for evidence."

Boots, 50' of rope, a compass, binoculars, and a camera are purchased for (let's say) $10 in the nearby town.

Then the plan is for either the next day or if there is time the same day to make an effort to find the caves.

April 19, 1940 American Aircraft Works, West Virginia
Bart was ready to go exploring in combat fatigues, and a sub-machine gun tucked into a duffle bag. Shiera was wearing a white blouse, blue jeans, and riding boots, with a machete at her side. Rex/Hour-Man was wearing...

The factory grounds were spread out on 11,000 acres of property surrounded by an enormous chainlink fence. It was a lot of ground to cover, but most of it was flat, or nearly flat, with scattered trees and brush only around the outer margins. So it made sense to focus on the perimeter.
It was while searching along the acres nearest to the north fence that they spotted it. Virtually unnoticeable from the south was a large area, north of the abandoned hangar, that remained level while the ground gradually sloped down around it. At its northern terminus, this created a 40' tall cliff. It was while searching the cliff that they found a cave mouth, 5' wide and 6' tall, that led into darkness.
"Eureka..." Bart said.
"It looks like we're standing on top of a limestone karst," Shiera said. "There's no telling how far this extends, or how many caves are connected to it."
This was at 10:30 am, after two and a half hours of searching. By 1 pm, they had still uncovered no second cave entrance.

Rex says, " well we could climb down there and at least see where this cave goes. IT is possible the others were ceiled or maybe covered up with camouflaged. " Rex looks for a place to tie off some rope so they can rappel down, unless there was some sort of lift?

Rappelling was not necessary since they were coming at it from the north; they were on the same level as the base of the small cliff there. Even had they come at it from the south, they could have circled wide around where the ground sloped down around the cliff and been at the base of it in about 10 minutes.
At Rex's insistence they searched for 'sealed' or camouflaged cave entrances, but -- even though they spent another hour on it ((so that it was then 2 o'clock)) -- they discovered no secondary tunnel entrances there.
"So this is it," Bart said about the cave mouth they had found. "Unless we really want a look inside now, we should probably go back and tell the others...?"

Rex comments, " well we are here we might as well look around. You are both armed and I have my powers in case there is danger. Lets take a little look and if it is dangerous we can retreat and tell the others. "

Bart Regan shared Rex's machismo and was equally eager to see the inside of the cave. Shiera was less sure. "I don't know if this is a good idea..." she said.
"Just watch our backs then," Bart said. "We won't go far."
Indeed, there was a practical reason for that -- since they had all been searching in broad daylight, no one had bothered to bring a flashlight!
The cave led into what looked like a natural tunnel, quickly widening in circumference as it sloped down and went further south and then southwest. By the time it was 40' in, the tunnel was 15' wide and 12' high, and looked like it opened into an even wider cavern to the south just past that. The cave stank of bat guano, which liberally coated the floor.
Past the entrance, the cavern was too dark to see by the sunlight filtering in.

"I've got a bad feeling about this..." Bart mutters, suddenly reversing his early enthusiasm.
"Oh why? Because we'll be fumbling around in the dark if we keep going?" Shiera whispered, dripping with sarcasm, from behind.
But Rex knew he had a flashlight back in his car. He could leave and come back with it in 20 minutes. Or, they could all leave and come back with all his allies. Or, wait until the appointed time tomorrow to bring them back here...

Later that day, the entire Justice Society reassembled at the farmhouse.
"This reconnaissance news could change everything," Doris said after Bart, Rex, and Shiera reported their findings. "What about your agendas, Sandman and Zatara?"
"Notes for a new spell were sent to me by mail," Zatara said, "but I have not had time to learn it."
"My results are similar," the Sandman said. "Some of the parts I need for a new gas gun were shipped to me, but I still need others."
"It sounds like both of those will take a lot of time," Bart said. "Time we can't afford to lose while we have a way to sneak up behind the saboteurs using their own caves."
"I have to say I'm inclined to agree," Doris said, "but now that we are all assembled we need to vote. Do we end this downtime a little early and explore the caves in the morning, or wait longer?"
"Hold on," the Sandman said. "I'm going to throw one more option in here - that we do go to the caves, but at night, not during the day. So no one sees us approach the caves this time."
"So we could go as soon as tonight," Shiera said. "Get this over with even sooner."
"Very well," Doris said, "we'll vote on these options. We go to the caves tonight, we go to the caves in the morning, we wait one more day and go tomorrow night."
((You vote first, Rex!))
